Hi barisavsaroglu,

Please check the event log to know if you still have the "Atikmdag has stopped responding and has successfully recovered" problem. I think it's in the system log.

You can do this now and check at the system crash time.

Grt.

I still get this error in the event logs..... except instead of becoming completely unresponseive, my browser just crashes after the display driver restarts....

I've updated every device driver I could find... the network devices, sound, everything!... I still have hanging when I play streaming vids off Hulu or youtube

It did it again, it has frosen.

I've updated the video driver and I also updated Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, it worked well for two days but today it stopped one time.

Yes it's better than before (when it stopped twice a day)!

I hope dell could ofiicially resolve the problem with something new driver.

Let's see what will happen next days..............

Some days ago I call dell to explain my problem and they said me to change in bios advanced virtualization from enabled to disabled: someone knows what it means?

Hi nnavivan,

Did you disable advanced virtualization? Is it helping? Did your system crash after switching it off?

I had problems with my new dell studio freezing when watching video mainly and also had random blue screens. read a post on here (sorry don't have link) and also a post on windows7forums which suggested using ATI driver modder to create mobility versions of the most recent drivers for the ATI card and then update that. since doing that mine has been working fine.

nvidamour,

Can you explain how to do that or give me the link where I can find information about the modder stuff? I cannot find it on windows7forums.

Thanks.

Yes, that's the way I explained.

I also check the modder. The Modtool_1.2.1.0_EN is supporting the Mobility 4570 and can modify the .inf files for you. The latest ATI driver (desktop version) is 9.12. The driver in this package is version 8.681.0.

Again i little bit newer. I currently also run with version 8.672.3.0.

I wanted to know if anyone is running with the (desktop) 8.681.0 version on a Studio 1557 with the ATI Mobility 4570 card.

The Modtool can modify the Catalyst 9.12 package. I did it. But I did not install the driver yet.

Is somebody working with 9.12 (8.681.0) version on a Studio 1557 ???????

managed to find the link from this site

http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19312776.aspx

basically you need to download driver modder http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php

this software will then modify ay ati driver to use with the card we have

currently i'm running 8.672.3.0 version of the drivers but i'd guess you vold install later ones but as mine is currently stable i'm not changing anything for the time being

hope this helps

Great! :emotion-1:

Maybe I will update to the 9.12 (8.681-091124a) version today.

Can please report back if you have a freeze again.

Thanks in advance.

Dear hwam,

Previous Radeon 4750 driver was 8.632.1.2000. then updated to 8.672.3_7a.

Freezes halved from 2 a day on average to only one a day (based on the last 4 days of use).

Pretty good improvement I must say.

This afternoon, I updated to the latest 8.681-091124a (from v9.12 desktop Catalyst using the mod tool) and its been working like a breeze.

But again, like all things IT, I will reserve my comments until a few days of testing.

aviator_cowboy,

Can you reproduce the freezing issue? What kind of software? Or youtube video?

I was able to reproduce the freeze "Atikmdag has stopped responding and has successfully recovered" problem with the old 8.632 version. Playing a DVD with PowerDVD 9 was enough to crash it.

With the 8.672 I cannot reproduce it. I got it once with a vmware session. I was playing a .mkv video with VLC in a Windows XP vmware session.

I actually tried the mod tool and the latest driver and catalyst version 9.12 (8.681) a few days ago, but still experienced occasional freezing... like everyone else, it was less than before, but still, I shouldn't have to experience any on a brand new "entertainment" laptop....

hwam, thanks for the solutions and I enjoyed reading these 4-page threads discussion.

My situation is more or less similar, except that I own a studio 1450 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530.

I experienced laptop freezes once a while browsing using ie8, like once a day, not as frequent as you guys have experienced, probably I have not used it too much on video yet.

My driver version is 8.631.  Can I try the newer driver you provided on the gateway site?  Will that work for Radeon HD 4530?

Thanks for help.

I've tried every combo possible. Updated all drivers for all devices as suggested. I tried your solution and it still has occasional crashes. I tried the modded driver and new catalyst an still can't watch steaming vids (YouTube, hulu, etc) in full screen. I won't accept a partial solution so I've asked Dell for one. They said they'll have their solution response team review and get back to me by tomorrow. I'll post what they say when I hear.
