Hi all,

I completely agree with Marktallman. At this moment there is still no solution for this ATI freezing issue.

Nothing is fixed! Also with all the updates from Dell or directly from ATI the problem still exists. It’s also not an Adobe problem because the ATI card will also crash with vmware. Try the same on a system with a nvidia video card and it will work fine.

You have the rights to swap the system or better a full refund. You have the proof that’s not only one system and you have the print screens that are telling you that the i7 is not compatible with the 4570 ATI card. What do you need more?

Just keep calling Tech support, Sales and Customer support and mention the Forum.

Success.

Thank you for your agreement.  I appreciate this.  However, the freezes are not limited to video, vmware, etc.  My system would freeze with nothing open but my desktop!  It would even freeze in my screen saver with not a single application open.

I can also confirm that this is not specific to Adobe or anything else besides the hardware/driver/OS/default Dell software configuration of the computer.  Mine has frozen 2 times in a row with nothing else opening. I started it up, and it froze as soon as everything (or possibly while programs were still starting up on boot).  I restarted and it happened when it booted back up and my desktop was loading.  Had to restart a second time and then it finally loaded my desktop and everything was good.

If you have tried different versions of Adobe flash player and don't experience the freeze problems playing HD videos on youtube, then you have only solved ONE aspect of the problem.  The problem is the entire video card.  There are several other functions for the video card other than just playing videos on youtube....

Ok i have news XD .. my Laptop is DEAD :-P, randon BSOD, With no explanation, even with 4 clean installs the same day, with different dvds, just booting without doing anything... so right know is with Dell's Partner... i have being reading a lot and i want to know if some one knows how to swap my system. in other sites dell have removed this 1557 model and replaced with a i5, and if you want to put i7 processor  the page indicates that Ati 4570 is not compatible with I7 processor so i think we have a clue , to change or swap our systems...

In Dell's Mexico site is not longer aviable this particular model, so i thing they cant fix the problems , i want to swap my laptop for an other but i dont know how to do it, even , making dells tech supourt to open a ticket was hard , because they over and over again said me that it was a software problem and i needed to pay for it... so after several hours of fighting and writing bad words XD.... they told me "OK. MR RUBEN WE ARE GOING TO CHECK YOUR SYSTEM, IF THE PROBLEM PERSIST PLEASE CALL OUR SOFTWARE DEPARTMENT" ¬¬ .... yeah right,

DELL-Todd,

I'm James Vasquez, owner of a Dell Studio 1557.

I have three problems with this system; Random Freezes and HD Video Lock ups in www.youtube.com

I uninstall the software Creative Sound Blaster X-FI MB five days ago; until now I don't have any random freezes; This software come with my system; the purpose of the software is to provides premium audio quality, effects and features; this is the link of this software: http://www.creative.com/oem/resources/Software/X-FiMB.pdf. Whats thats mean; that I can't use this software in my Dell Studio 1557?

For the second problem I install the Flash Player 10.1 beta; that only apear in Mozilla FireFox; because in Internet Explorer apear the 10.0 version. If I put this url in both browsers the versions are diferents: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Mozilla FireFox 3.6: Flash Player: 10,1,51,95 installed

Internet Explorer 8: Flash Player: 10,0,45,2 installed

First I uninstall the flash player with a uninstaller that exists in the same site of Adobe; then I make the install of the beta player; but only take effect in FireFox. I install de ATI CCC hot fix; but the installer say that all the ATI CCC software was updated; only install an aditional ATI Problem Report Wizard Well; I test in FireFox watching this trailer in HD 1080: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i2RCBa3l-g&feature=related I see the 3 minutes of the trailer without problem; before of the updates, in the last part of the trailer the screen come black, then white; then all the system crash; slow motion for all the windows opened; and I have to shut down the system with the power botton.

Exists another problem with VMWare when run a virtual machine in full screen; that is similar to the HD stream problem. For this problem I think that don't exist a solution in this system until now.

The question is why in anothers systems of other vendors with the same specifications and the same software (Windows 7 64bits, FlashPlayer 10, VMWare 7.0) don't have this kind of issues? Why? Why? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy??????

Hi,

I have been running my 1557 with no crashes for more than 2 months. It is very stable, without a single crash. I do have crashes in the beginning, so I can understand how others feel. Here is what I did to the system

1) Never let system goes to hibernate, or sleep mode. (This is by far my biggest causes for crashes, strange that nobody mentioned this).

2) Disable "hardware acceleration" in flash player. I am using Flash player version 10. So far no problem.

3) Uninstalled McAfee anti-virus. I am now using Kaspersky.

4) I remove battery pack, and run totally on power. I did this to prolong my battery life and no other reasons.

I am also running all sorts of programs, Apple QuickTime viewing HD contents, Sun VirtualBox running XP guest, all without any problems. I am very happy with my system, I hope others can try the above changes and acheive the same stability.

I also owned a Dell Vostro400 QuadCore (running Vista) with ATI graphics for more than 2 years, and it initially also cause me the same problem, especially with sleep or hibernation mode, and dual screen display. However with Windows 7, the Vostro400 has been rock solid so far, though I still hesitate to use sleep or hibernate mode.

And again my post was removed, I don't know why. I'm only telling the truth. So I’m posting it again.

Hi johnny_kim,

Do you also remove the doors if you by a car??

- Disable hardware acceleration!
- Only working with power supply!
- Never use sleep or hibernate!

These things have to work! Return the unit.

I have got my money back after 2 months!!!

Any other non Dell system is running fine. No Dell for me anymore.

Grt.

johnny_kim   (see johnny_kim's 4th post) DELL-Todd S, please note johnny_kim's post, it works.

Your fix worked and it is simple, thank you.  I ran an HD 1080p full screen youtube 10 or more times, no crashes.  I never use the hibernate, or sleep mode, they just do not work properly and are a good source of problems.  You have to wonder if a higher capacity power supply would fix the problem.  Dell Support has not been able to give me a fix for this problem.  This video problem has not been a high priority for me, but I would like to use the hd 1080p occasionally without crashing my computer.  Like many I have spent way too many hours fixing a new expensive computer.

Remaining Computer Problems:(see previous post for all the freezing problems, they are fixed now).
Function keys in the bios keep changing back to fn key 1st.
My previous posts explain other fixed problems.

Repairs:
Ran System test tools, no problems found. Dell had me run them again.
12-07-09 Removed Yahoo Tool bar, siteadvisor working now, there were some conflicts.
12-29-09 reinstalled Dell Quickset .
01-05-10 ran chkdsk /r from cmd and system disk.
01-10-10 Updated Realtek Ethernet Driver from Microsoft win updates.
01-18-10 Dell Replaced the mother board. I Re-flashed the bios to 03 (this update at Dell is marked urgent)
03-06-10 Flashed the bios to A04.
01-20-10 Did a system repair install from the system DVD that came with the computer. This solved all the freezing problem.
This site explains a repair install:(this site follows fairly well, there may be some differences)
http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-do-a-repair-install-to-fix-windows-7/
03-15-10 Installed the latest ATI driver direct from ATI as requested by Dell tech support.  10-2_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu.exe
This driver would not install CCC center and the video still crashed the computer.  On the website it recommends using Dell's driver.

hi hwam,

- I dont see any difference when using or not using hardware acceleration for Flash player. After all I like to download the HD content and watch it. So I usually dont use Flash player to watch video.

- I use my 1557 for more than 8 hours every day, and longer on weekends, when I just leave it to run overnight. So I have to plug in the power anyway, so why not I just take out the battery to prolong the battery life. I do use the battery occasionaly, and I noticed that when the 1557 running out of power, it doesnt give much warning. It just goes to hibernation mode without any message. For a brief moment the notebook would appear to be hang, with no response except the keyboard backlight. Then after a 10-15 secs the notebook gives out a long "peep" and power down itself.

- I wouldnt trust my work done to a hibernation or sleep mode. Too much risk to take for losing a day's work. So I always shutdown it properly.

What are you all doing!?

Read this post. The Studio 1557 has a big problem with the ATI 4570 video card. It's not even on the Dell website anymore. Print screens are available that proofs this issue. The Studio 15 i7 has compatibility problems with the ATI 4570 card. Dell knows this and confirmed this issue. It cannot be fixed with disabling features, it's only a work-arround.

Again, read this post. Dell is not able to fix it completely.

Ok, I know this is probably a stupid question...but I'm good at that.  How do you disable the hardware acceleration in flash player?  Also, is it the opinion of most that running  McAfee is a problem with this system?  I've been using it because it came pre-loaded and seems to do a decent job, but if it's part of the problem then I have no issue with replacing it...

Todd,

Please tell me why Dell is not informing those unhappy people. All those people are trying a lot of things that doesn't help. Where is the Dell service? My Laptop is returned and I got a full refund. It's crazy it's going on like this. Because of the bad service I will never buy a Dell system anymore. The hardware is fine but the service!

I also never got an answer about the ATI 5470 card, has this card issues too? If not, why not swap those very bad 1557 system for a 1558?

Dell is not helping all those people on this Forum. Do you call this service? Write a letter to those guys and confirm Dell has problems with the 1557.

No, Dell is beta testing with all the 1557 owners!

What kind of service is that?

First off, thank you Dell - Todd for letting me know how to disable hardware acceleration.

But, I do have to agree with hwam here...if the Studio 1557 i7 has compatibility problems with the ATI 4570 card, then why won't DELL acknowledge this to those of us that already purchased this product...and better yet, offer us other options to make this right?  I (along with others) spent ALOT of money (for me) to buy this laptop...I need it for my work.  I shouldn't have to be expected to "disable this, shut down that, re-load this, etc..."...should I?  I feel fairly competent in doing some work arounds, but I don't feel like I should have to do this type of stuff for a computer that is pretty much right out of the box...  I have spent too much time dealing with this, either trying workarounds, or spending time on these forums or other forums trying to get things "right"...

Right click on any Flash based video on the web (ie Youtube).  Right click on it, then select Settings from the options.  There should be a check box next to Enable Hardware Acceleration, uncheck it.

I, personally, don't think its McAfee but take that as my personal opinion and not a fact.   It may help display symptoms of the problem, though.
