My daughter's did this - as with all batteries - even rechargable - they only last so long.  We bought a new one and it is as good as new now.

Sounds like the laptop can't communicate with the AC adapter. Based on "spent a while playing with adaptor" the power jack on the motherboard could be loose. This is a soldering job taking about an hour for some-one who knows how.

If the problem happens again - don't touch any wires - shut down the laptop and power-on an go into BIOS setup (press F2 while starting)

The go to the section of the AC power adapter and check if it's reported as "unknown adapter". If so the laptop battery will not be charged.

Read all about the ID chip in the AC power adapter and related problems.

I have an inspiron E1505 with the same problem.  The light on the charger is on and I can use the laptop while plugged in but it will not charge the battery.  The battery is relatively new as is the charger.  When I replaced the charger it charged the battery fine.  The symptom I have is when the charger is first plugged in the battery light on the laptop comes on.  After about a minute the light goes out without charging the battery.  If I unplug the charger it says I need to charge the battery...please help.
