First thing to do is try an external monitor - if it works correctly, you have of three possible faulty parts: the backlight, the inverter or the mainboard. You'll likely need an LCD repair specialist to determine which, and repair accordingly.
I connected the laptop to a monitor and I did see something on the monitor. It was in Dell Media Direct. I am not very familiar with this computer because it is my daughter's. I restarted the laptop and I do see a dim picture again on the laptop screen. The harddrive light continues to blink. I do not have a picture on the monitor. I pushed the "Fn" key and "F8" which at the bottom of the "F8" says crt/lcd. I still see the dim background on the laptop, but when I toggle it with "F8" in one position, the green light on the monitor is solid and in one position the light on the monitor is blinking. Still no picture on the monitor since I restarted the laptop. The drive light is still blinking. Could the computer be scanning possibly? Should the monitor and laptop screen be lit at the same time, or should it be either one or the other. Any more suggestiona? WolfpackRon.
I found in the manual that the F8 key toggles between 1) LCD on laptop, 2) monitor, and 3) both the LCD and the monitor. I do not have a picture on the monitor now. I did when I first started. What may be causing this issue?
I was able to run diagnostics with F12. Everything seemed to pass. Things like Video Board and LCD Invert all passed. Does that mean the inverter is good? I am able to get a picture on an external monitor intermittantly. I watched it run a good portion of the diagnostics til it was finished, and when I restarted the laptop, I could not get the external monitor to work properly. I could not get the brightness to increase with Fn Up arrow. The power cord charger seems to be working properly also. How do you test the backlight or the mainboard? WolfpackRon.

Is there anything I need to do special to make the external monitor work besides connecting the blue plug?
I hit control, alt delete and the screen is completely dark now. On the laptop that is. I will hook up a separate monitor and try that.
Thanks, WolfpackRon.
