Many thanks for the great info,when i press ctrl+f11 it just brings up safe mode,safe mode with networking,safe mode with command prompt or start windows normally,it says in that link you sent me,that it should come up Dell pc restore by symantec with an option to restore,its running xp,any ideas,regards

The easiest way restore the laptop to its original OS is to boot from the Dell Recovery CD/DVD.
