Dave,

Thanks for your response and thank you for you service (USN).

So if it is a backlight or inverter issue, how can I check/replace that? It seems to go dim in less time with subsequent startups - such as I'll start it up tomorrow, and it'll be fine for about 7 minutes, go black, I'll get mad, shut it off, turn it on, and then it'll go dark sooner, like 5 minutes.

Each time it goes dark quicker. See what I'm saying?

Yeah it's old and I'm looking to get a replacement, but I do have some important stuff on there I need to get off.

    Thanks again!

Not really as they both give the same type of indications. A shop will be able to figure it out.

replacement of a inverter or back light should be done at a shop that is familiar with working on laptops. I believe the price range would be around 150

Ok, awesome Dave, but how can you tell if the inverter or back light is the problem to start with?

Is there a quick DIY check I can do that proves if it's the inverter or back light before I take it to a shop?

Thanks again for your help!

If you can faintly see the display then it could be more of either the back light or inverter issue.  USB issues can be software or hardware related.

Since the laptop is over 4 yrs old it may not be worth sinking money into it. Looking at this Google page the prices for a new/refurbished board are all over the place.
