It sounds like a broken latch. It usually easy to slide the lock to open the bay. If the battery is protruding slightly, the latch won't open. Turn it over and place on a flat surface and press down gently on the battery. The battery should click into place and allow the latch to open. IMO, spending over $100 on a new battery for such an old laptop is not worth it. Not with new laptops costing less than $500. I'd use it with the adapter until you can replace the computer.
