Thanks for updating with a guide and providing the files. I followed the steps but still no luck. I'll try the files next.

When I mentioned I would not buy a Dell laptop again, that's simply because of the poor customer service. They should have solutions for these issues, instead we have to dive in the forums and rely on the graces of someone like you.

Thanks again for all the effort!

I forgot to mention, that it could be helpful to download the newest amd graphic card driver.

As i said before, I had tried it also a lot of times till  it works, I'm not a specialst.. But I think it should work if you paste the files which i posted before to appdata (The folder is hidden, if you don't find it - google helps..)

Regarding the service: My display was broken, I called Dell and the next day there was a nice guy in front of my door who repairs it for free..

In contradiction, I had a (software) problem with a Macbook, I called Apple and they told me I would need to buy first the gurantee Blabla..

Unfortunately, even with the latest driver for the graphics card i am not able to display max resolution on HDMI.

I have followed the steps Otto set out, have also tried copying his files into the right directory and buying an HDMI 1.3 cable. Nothing seems to help, the max resolution i get on HDMI is 1920x1080....

If i dont find a solution by tonight im going to have to return the monitor tomorrow :(

it really sucks DELL are incompetent on these issues...Thanks to all for feedback, especially to Otto, i wonder how you make it work man! Not sure what else to try... have reproduced the procedure numerous times but never manage to get what i want out of HDMI...

tried everything for multiple hrs but wont work.. i will send the screen back and get the Dell U2410.

Considering this problem has been known to Dell since 2009 at least i would say they SUCK at customer service! I will now need to send back this screen paying for transport etc... really dissapointed!

Thanks again Otto for trying to help us out here.

I have a 1645 xps 16 and i've managed to output 2560x1440 on a 27" using an active displayport to Dual Link Dvi adaptor ($50 on ebay, or $100 from dell). I have the 5730m gpu and the monitor detects it right away when plugged into the DP>DVI converter.

Thanks for your reply Krisspy. Having given up i bought the 24" dell which works really well and am really happy. Yes slightly smaller resolution but a plus is that you can use it vertically (not that you do that often anyway!).

Hello all, nice to know (actually pretty disappointing to learn) that I am not alone in this .....though 9/10 Dell reps polled (who have each probably worked there less than a year) thought this was a new issue .....amusing that the thread goes back to March of 2010 and people are still commenting on it--> let's get to it:

bought this laptop in 2009. Dell XPS Studio 1640 Vista  Ultimate ($MSFT should have never released vista anything), ATI Radeon 4670, 6 GB RAM.  The laptop itself is spectacular.  just recently wanted to do dual monitors (triple I suppose with the laptop, Found out that the funny shaped port was displayport and not HDMI.  Long story short, bot 2 U2312HM monitors this week, neither works with displayport.  Interestingly enough, the monitors don't come with display port cables, but have the DP connections.....called dell (2 hours later with GOLD tech support), the dude wanted to replace the motherboard....that wasn't about to happen........as everyone has noticed, VGA works perfectly.......the DP connection to the monitors actually works with my Latitude E6410 from work but at a lesser resolution which sucks.

Do I have this correct???? The only real solution is two buy U2410s or get a 5000 series graphics card.....no idea if the XPS 1640 would support such a card......anyone know?  I'd rather upgrade the card, the monitors would be a pain to ship  back, etc.

My last post was deleted by a moderator for some unknown reason, so reposting the simple response. "you can not upgrade video cards, they are built in to the MB"

yeah, talked to the IT at work who is paid by HP, he said the same thing, the video card is placed on the motherboard.   But when I spoke with Dell, they spoke of replacing the motherboard.  It is worth a call back to Dell to see if they would send it with a 5000 series video card.....this might solve the problem.   I also called AMD to discuss things today.  They said that Dell controls this whole resolution business.  The engineers set it for what seems to be DP only to output at a lower resolution with firmware so there will be no overheating........what did Ian Malcolm say in in Jurassic Park?...."God help us, we're in the hands of engineers".  The AMD guy said to buy a new laptop.  But I have a 3rd previously unmentioned option -  I have a matrox dualhead2go coming on Tuesday (thank you CDW fraud department for the delay).  The Matrox compatibility tool said that I could do 2 monitors at 1920x1080 at 60hz.  We'll see on Tuesday.  Stay tuned folks, we're headed into double jeapordy where the scores can really change.

Ok kids, update time.  So I am copying my review on the Matrox Dualhead2GO DP edition from CDW, so sue me, Dell doesn't sell it, if they did, I would have bought it from them.

Tried to connect 2 Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM Monitors through the Matrox Dualhead2GO DP Edition to a laptop. Tried the connection with 2 different laptops:

Successful - No Problems
Dell Latitude E6410
NVIDIA NVS 3100M
XP Pro 32 bit

Unsuccessful
Dell XPS Studio 1640
ATI Radeon HD 4760
Vista Ultimate 64bit - a hate the land of mordor for ever introducing this garbage OS.

Definitely check compatibility on the Matrox website before purchasing.

The website said it would work with both computers, however there was no anticipation of what tricks Dell might pull.

Both laptops have display ports, however as I found on the Dell community forum, there is an issue dating back 3 years with the XPS 1640 Displayport (DP). It will not output at the same resolution as the laptop screen because of firmware installed by Dell to keep the motherboard from overheating. As a result the screen would flicker and turn off randomly when connected to the Matrox device at full 1920x1080@60hz.
Called Matrox tech support (being open 9-5 EST is pretty lame) and they were very helpful. I spoke with Kevin. He was great and very friendly (he's from Canada, eh). He definitely helped. Although we were unable to come up with a solution. He showed me exactly what I needed to do with my Latitude when I brought it home from work. I hooked up the Latitude this evening and it works like a champ. I am still in talks with Dell about the XPS workhorse that I got 3 years ago. It seems Dell made 3 versions: 1640, 1645, and 1647. They corrected the DP output problem with the 1647 as they put in an ATI 5000 series graphics card. Not sure if they would perform an exchange for a 1647, but I purchased the computer with the best warranty money could buy, so we shall see what happens as it is still under warranty.
The Matrox product is great. Great tech support (lousy hours). And it is not hot and does not seem to get hot as I had read elsewhere.
The saga will continue with Dell. I am confident that we will reach a resolution.
I must say, having 3 monitors (one the laptop screen) is so choice. If you have the means (and are certain you can get it to work), I highly recommend it.

Hi Sweetanimal,

I read your review hoping like you, that an answer to the Dell XPS 16 (1640) display resolution on an external monitor issue may be fixed.

However I am confused regarding the outcome you have been seeking. I have precisely the same 1640 notebook and went through my machinations on
this subject quite over a year ago. Is your issue that you want two external monitors (meaning notebook monitor plus two additional monitors) at 1920 x 1080
or are you trying to get the highest resolution possible on a single external monitor (meaning the notebook monitor plus one other)? I ask because you can get an
absolute maximum of 1980 X 1200 with a single monitor (a bit more than you achieved with 2 external monitors - 1920 x 1080 I understand) using the Display
Port.

I am getting 1920 x 1200 on my Ultrasharp U2410 right now. If you have a look at my post http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/p/19325378/19878929.aspx#19878929 from over a year ago. You will see I tested all the Ultrasharp monitors at Harris Technology and established that the 27" and above does not work but the U2410 down works perfectly on the Display Port.

I wish I had read this before buying a Dell U2713HM display since I'm having exactly the same problem driving it from my StudioXPS 1640. Unfortunately, no resolution works reliably via DisplayPort. Using a DP->DVI adapter, I can get to about 2K wide. Multiple DP cables and a motherboard replacement later, I still have the problem. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that Dell has a design problem and are shipping a motherboard with a non-compliant DisplayPort. That said, the support guy who replaced the mobo said it was the first time he had seen a DisplayPort problem like this.

Time to get back to Dell Tech Support and see whether there's anything else they can do before I return this display.

A few weeks ago, i reinstalled my win7 as i bought an ssd to speed up the system. Before i installed the graphic card driver, i installed powerstrip. This time it was quite easy to become full resolution. Just install it, go to configure display options -> to timing options ->own resolutions -> and set datas as shown in the picture.

After a reboot it was succesful applied. (All via HDMI cable. I tried it also with DP and it's possible to get the picture but it's not stable)

Greetings

Thank you very much otto899.

It works great for me with an HDMI 1.3 cable !!! This is the most important point because I tried with a standard HDMI cable and unfortunately it didn't work :)

I'm still using my DELL STUDIO 1640 XPS (my wife too) and I just bought the Dell 27" U2713HM.

I am very happy to be able to use the max resolution of the screen with my laptop.

Thank you again for your help !!!
