Hellllooooooo?  Is anyone out there?

This is a simple process that requires ~1 minute to check on any Inspiron xx64, yet nobody has tried it?

Reproduced on my Inspiron 1764 with Intel HD driver (version 8.15.10.1968).  Also get periodic website and program hangs.  Not certain if this is attributable to the graphics chipset or not.  --R

Yes, random program and website hangs seem to be part of the same 4-6 seconds freezing problem for me.  The freezing also seems to only occur while Windows Aero is enabled.  I have Intel HD driver version 8.15.10.1986.

I also reproduced the issue with a fresh install of a retail version of Windows 7 Professional.  In that case, before updating any other drivers, I updated to the latest graphics driver (to get Aero working) and the freezing issue still occurred.  Therefore, the problem does not seem to be related to any other software or drivers.  Seems like it is a specific issue between the display drivers and the new Inspiron 1464/1564/1764 hardware, if that makes any sense.

Anyone else want to verify this behavior on their own machine?  If it doesn't happen to you then post that as well.

I should also note that this problem occurs both before and after updating the bios.  I am running the latest bios version (A06), but the freezes happen to any integrated graphics Inspiron 1464/1564/1764 off the shelf with bios A01.

I am amazed that more people are not responding to this thread considering this issue potentially affects every model of one of the newest dell laptops!

Update:

After contacting Dell Tech Support with this issue, they elevated the issue to the next support level or something and then they decided to exchange my system without really telling me why they thought this would help.  So today I received a new Inspiron 1764 with an identical configuration to my original one.  And, like I've been trying to tell people all along, this new system has the same freezing issue!  Oh well, they said they would call me in a day or so to see how this new system works out...

Considering the lack of interest in this topic on this forum, the only thing I can conclude from this is that most people who buy an Inspiron laptop from Dell do not notice or do not care if it completely freezes up for 5 seconds every once in a while, even in certain games.

I just received my new inspiron 1564 with intel HD graphics yesterday. It freezes the screen for 5 - 6 sec every few minutes with just one or 2 internet explorer windows running. If I run a video, when the freeze happens, the audio contine to run where as the screen just freezes. The cntrl + alt + delete does not repond while the screen is freezed. Is this going to be resolved if I get a replacement of the same configuration? Do anyone know if this is issue with the intel HD graphics? Or some other issue?

Yea...you're in good company here.  It's driving me loco but I'm at a loss at to what to try next.  Areo seems to be a common theme as to the cause.  Does disabling Aero help?  Not even sure if that's an option?

tomct -

If yours is freezing for 10-60 seconds then I'm not sure if what you are experiencing is the same freezing issue.  Did you try doing the steps I outlined in the first post here to reproduce this freezing behavior?  See if you get the same thing, otherwise your freezing issue might be different.

RKHIII -

The couple times I tried disabling Aero and running my computer in Windows 7 Basic the freezing did not occur.  You can try this by right clicking your desktop, clicking on Personalize, and selecting one of the "Basic and High Constrast" themes.  This is not really a solution though, because Aero is much better IMO.

I've two 1546 units just out of box.   Heard BIOS issues ... here I am now.   A06 is out and before I do the patch, I'll ask this:

Of course going to patch .. will it BSOD my new units?

Should I ship them back now and ask for my money back?

I'm willing to push BIOS patch and test results tomorrow night.  Comments?

Its 5-6 sec randomly. Sometimes within few min.

There are couple of people reported this issue and seems like its the integrated intel HD chip issue. Please look at this forum:

I am trying to contact Dell to get the ATI chip insteead of the Intel HD graphics.

Yeah, that's the thread I linked to in the first post here.

So now I have two Inspiron 1764's sitting in my room, both of them with the integrated graphics bug.  Dell hasn't called me to check how my "new" system is doing, so I guess I will call them back again.  At least the Dell support people are nice.

First of all, one of the first things I did when purchasing my new 1764 was flash the bios.  It hung in the middle of the flash which baked the motherboard.  Dell was cool about it...they dispatched a tech to replace the board.  All of that to say that unless you feel a bios flash is needed, I'd probably wait.  It's been stated from another user experiencing the same Intel grahics problem that a bios flash DID NOT fix the problem so I wouldn't flash it thinking it's gonna fix your woes.  As for whether or not to send the units back, thats your call.  If I had that option, I think I might, or at least exchange them for systems with the other integrated chipset (think it's ATI or Nvidia).  Dell and Intel hopefully know there is an issue but getting companies of their size to move with an sense of expediancy probably isn't going to happen.  All of this to say that it's an issue that could likely easily be rectifed with a chipset firmware or driver update.  In the meantime, it's a problem that is annoying at best and rendering systems with the Intel chipset issue useless at worst.  Good luck with your decision...I wouldn't blame you for turning 'em back around.  --RH

I believe the bios update is really only important if you want to sync your laptop to your iPhone (I think this is one of the models that had the problem).  But as RKIII stated, A06 will NOT fix the freezing issue (and it doesn't make the fan run less if you are wondering).

This is also not specifically a problem with the Intel HD graphics, because other brands of computers with Intel HD graphics (Toshiba, Gateway, HP) that I have tried do not have this freezing issue.  Also, I tried a Dell Studio 15z which had an i5 processor and Intel HD graphics and that also did not have the freezing issue.  So this is specifically an issue with the 1464/1564/1764 + Intel HD graphics.

If you want Dell to know about this issue, then I suggest CALLING them (tech support) and complaining.  Tell them your graphics drivers are up to date, the bios is up to date (or the new bios will not fix this issue), and that others are having this problem and it is not specifically YOUR computer.  If they try to give you a system exchange (of an identical system) or ask you to send your system in, tell them NO, that will not fix the issue, because ALL Dell Inspiron xx64 models with Intel HD graphics have the same problem.  You must be very clear, because they've already sent me a second identical laptop and want me to send my current one back in, which of course is ridiculous because BOTH laptops have the same problem, so they just wasted their own time and money because they apparently did not actually read this thread.  I will be calling them tomorrow (since they have never called me back like they said they would) to check on this issue again.

By the way, these are not "Dell Tech Support" forums, these are Dell community forums, so I do not believe Dell has anybody who actually reads these threads normally unless it's a major issue and they are alerted to it.  This is why you must CALL Dell if you want them to worry about this issue.

I spoke to dell support yesterday and requested to go thru this thread which he read. However, he still updated the drives and the bios.
I am probably returning the system.
