Christoph,

Did you install the Sigmatel HD audio driver? There is not one for Windows 7 so you must use the Vista version  Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> and install using Vista compatibility mode.

Download the driver package using the browser, not Dell Download Manager. Extract the files (unzip or unpack) but cancel the installation process. Go to the hard drive to
c:\Dell\Drivers\R171788   (This is the folder that is created when you unpack the download. It contains the driver files.)
Right click on setup.exe and select Properties. Find the compatibility tab to select Vista.

Thanks, Jim. That helped at least to install the driver. But I still don't have a mixer device. I remember that I had some kind of Creative Labs. Mixer that used to work (at least under XP Pro 32bit). Any clues how to get that same mixer for Win7?

Thanks,

Christoph

Christoph,

Creative Labs mixer means that you used to have some Creative Labs software installed. There was an XP and a Vista32 version but not Vista 64. I am pretty sure that neither will work on 7 64.

Dell sold it in 3 ways at different times, as a download purchase, or on discs, or pre-installed on a computer. If you got it on discs or pre-installed you should be able to obtain backup discs from Dell here. Skip over the top part of the page that pertains to data safe.

The downloadable version was split into 2 parts. An Audigy driver <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> that one could download and install after the Sigmatel driver was installed. I don't remember if the driver contained the mixer or if you had to get the next part of the package for the mixer.

After the driver one would download a demo of the rest of the software called the Invitation. The Invitation contained a link to Creative's site where you could pay $20 and download the rest of the software.

When Vista was released and some XP users upgraded to Vista. Dell created a downloadable upgrade path for the software, which was how owners of the XP software could switch it to Vista. (There was never a way to purchase the Vista version from scratch as a download, but one could order it from Dell on discs.)

As far as I know there is no 7 version, but I think the Vista version might work in 7 32 if installed under Vista compatibility mode, but probably not in 7 64. However if you have the Vista version of the software on a disc it might be an interesting experiment to try it.

Another thought. I don't know if you used the recording source called "stereo mix" when you had XP, but if that if what you are after I'm sorry but it only works in XP. In the other operating systems your recording sources are limited to mic or line-in.

This is a limitation of the Sigmatel driver. When they wrote the Vista versions of it they disabled the stereo mix source. For that matter they had also disabled it in all versions of the XP driver except the last version that was released in Dec '07.
