Uninstalling the Creative SB X-FI does not disable the soundcard, but I guess removes some of the SoundBlaster functionality probably most obvious in gaming or other high end applications. My device manager shows an ATI High definition Audio Device and the IDT High Defintion Audio Codec. For regular uses in Windows 7, playing Youtube or other audio/video sources, it appears to be working correctly.
So in other words: Yes, the sound is working after uninstalling the SB software.
I don't think the PCI Power is a fix. I disabled that since day 1 and I have had 5 freezes since then. I have installed Flash Beta 10, disabled Sound Blaster, uninstalled Cat Control Manger(I am using the ATI driver from Dell) and have not had a crash yet...knock on wood....I also disabled power management on USB ports and everything else in device manager. So it does not shut off to save power.
I agree. I have experienced 3 lockups so far AFTER disabling the PCI Power management. So, this "workaround" definitely doesn't solve the problem.
So here I am again, writing this post again, and loosing my time AGAIN to do dell engineer's job (again).
Here is a video, where you can - TODD BILL - see how I reproduce the video crash WITHOUT involving flash, never ever. Yes, my video proves a 100% that the crashes are UNRELATED to adobe's flash. Maybe that's why I was deleted. but whatever. I am warned now and will do a copy paste, just in case I am deleted again.
So how to reproduce ? go to your store, buy a good DVB-T TV USB stick, plug it, launch pouchin TV (a very good tv app), and watch the disaster when you activate ati powerplay. install ati catalyst version : whatever you want, it crashes on every one for now. Or watch my video.
Does that seem hard to reproduce, that your engineers never succeeded in crashing the laptop like that ? Because me, at home, I reproduce the crash EVERY TIME I TRY.
Ha, I was forgetting : now dell, todd, bill, just show this video to your engineers, and don't say or let them say you have no reliable proof that the crashes occur outside flash. Yes, the crashes - at least the ones I suffer from - are purely related to ATI power management. And you know what ? It IS written in the video bios. So get us a new one PLEASE.
motherboard n° : don't have it under the arm, 'cause of the deletion and am at work.

I've forwarded this video to our contacts in the engineering department. Thanks for posting it.
My machine: Studio 1747 i7 820 processor, ATI 4650 video, 8 GB ram, 2 x 500 GB HD, Soundblaster X-Fi, BluRay RW, LED 1080p display: My symptoms were random freezes averaging 2-3 per day. My fix: Dell replacement HD with new factory Win 7 image. (Dell diagnostics found a flaw).
For your comparison. I have a Hauppauge TV stick (HVR 950Q). I watch TV routinely using Media Center, and have it running while writing this post.. All drivers, including ATI 4650 are as shipped from Dell (Mar 3), and ATI PowerPlay is enabled. Also, I've installed roughly 20 favorite apps & utilities but no games.
Today, I am 19 days freeze-free, with no other known problems. I've recently started using a 130 watt adapter, but I'm still running bios A07 -- I'm still nervous about "fixing" a stable computer with A08. The 130 watt adapter runs much cooler, and I've measured improved speed of a math intensive engineering program I use routinely. I'll probably update to A08, in hopes of further improved performance.

Dear Cat58,
Can you be a little more specific? Which diagnostics did you run exactly and what was the flaw they found?
Can you be a little more specific? Which diagnostics did you run exactly and what was the flaw they found?
Hi adandris
Sure. My scribbled notes from Mar 1st say: "Per Dell Tech Support suggestion, I Pressed F12 during boot, and selected the 'Diagnostic' menu choice". (These diagnostics take a LOONG time. I ultimately ran them twice). I accepted all offers for any tests. While doing (I think) an HD surface scan, it threw an error. "Error code 0F00:1332. Block 37961448 interrupt IRQ did not set in time".
I reported this to Dell Tech Support, and after some discussion & questions, they sent me a new, pre-imaged hard disk. Since I didn't want to risk a stored flaw, I rebuilt my apps, printer installs, etc. from scratch, rather than risk losing the new install by restoring a disk image. As you can guess, I now have multiple, stored images of this stable build. If you're interested in any more details, see my posts on Mar 17 & Mar 18, 2010. Good luck
Your computer is freezing because of the Soundblaster X-Fi stuff. When you computer is "dinging" when new messages come up (etc.) is when the freeze occurs. It has nothing to do with the video. Uninstall the Soundblaster stuff from the control panel, reboot, and your computer will stop locking up.
Things I have changed (in the order I changed them): • 3/17, AM - Installed BIOS A08 • Several freezes here. • 3/17, all night - Running hardware diagnostics – no issues. • 3/18, 8:00 AM - Turning off the link state power management features of the PCI Express through power management. • Two freezes here • 3/18, 11:30 AM – Start using 130W power supply. • 3/18, 11:30 AM - Deactivate PowerPlay through the Catalyst Control Center • 3/18, Noon - Install updated Flash 10.3 per instructions on this board. • 3/18, 12:30 PM - Installed ATI CCC hotfix.
No problems on 3/19, idle for the weekend, then... • Random Freeze on 3/22, 8:29 AM, while browsing company Sharepoint site. • Random Freeze on 3/22, 10:34 AM, while away from laptop. Email notification popup was still up, machine frozen. • Random Freeze on 3/22, 11:57 AM, while browsing company Sharepoint site. • Random Freeze on 3/22, 1:21 PM, while browsing company Sharepoint site.
Things I have NOT tried yet: • Uninstalling the Soundblaster X-FI software • Reinstalling the OS from scratch
Dells customer service adviced me to carry out the below stated steps to restore my image and the lady thought that might help fixing the problems I had.
I´m not an expert but I have not changed my system after it was delievered and the only programm I´ve installed was a pdf creater. So using common sense I wonder how this could solve the freezing, lockup and throttling issues when my laptop did not work in the first place??? Any ideas please???
You´re thoughts are much appreciated!
HiB,
Please try the steps below to get the issue on the machine sorted. Please reply to this email letting me know if the issue is fixed. Please take a back up of all the data on the system before you try these steps, since dellwouldn’tbe responsible for any data loss.
1) Restart your computer, press the F8 key for couple of times at Dell logo to access "Windows Advanced Boot Options."
2) From Windows Advanced Boot Options select the option "Repair My Computer"
3) You will get a screen that says "System Recover Options"which will list all the User Accounts on your computer.
4) Once you click on the User Account you would get a WinRE window which will list following options :
a) System Repair
b) System Restore
c) Windows Complete PC Restore
d) Windows Memory Diag tool
e)Command Prompt
f) Dell Factory Image Restore
You will need to use the last option in this list.
In some models the last option is not Dell Factory Image Restore and would be called asDell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Back up
If the option is called as the Dell Datasafe Restore and Emergency Backup, please follow the steps below after selecting the same option,
You will need to use the last option in this list.
Then you will get 2 options: PressRESTARTbutton with that Highlighted and SHUT DOWN

More data
Studio 1747
I7- Q720
8gb Ram 1333MHz
Windows 7 - 64bit
Bios - A08 - 130w adapter
900p Screen
With Dell ATI drivers and Flash, the only way I could prevent video lockups was to disable Hardware Acceleration.
1. Uninstalled Flash
2. Installed ATI Catalyst 10.3 preview driver
3. Installed Flash Player 10.1 beta
All videos working perfectly with Flash Hardware Acceleration enabled.
I am just disappointed that between Dell, AMD, and Adobe Flash........A lot of us are having to do your homework..............................

Correction, 5 freezes in 4 hours.
Random Freeze on 3/22, 1:31 PM, while turning off charging, and plugging in power supply, relatively close in time (3-secs)

Hi everyone,
I have a Dell Studio 1745.
