I just got my sons Dell Inspiron 1545 this week.  After one day the mousepad starts acting up.  The pointer jumps all over the screen, automatically clicks on icons or buttons.  I just talked to my son a few hours ago and it is still acting up.  After reading this post, I am VERY disappointed with Dell.  They continue selling these computers KNOWING they have a problem with the mousepad.  I have bought a lot of Dell computers for my home and the agency I work for, but if I dont get some resolution QUICK to this problem,  I will have to convert to HP, or some other brand.  OH,  and Google "mousepad problems dell 1545".  PAGES of problems.  No Wonder Dell's reputation is in the toilet!

I hope they let me post this..I got so fed up with complaining to them about the mouse that they sent a tech out to replace the whole top of my laptop..still did not fix the problem..so they offered me a brand new studio 1555 laptop with a lighted key board, a 6gbits intel 800mhz, 4500 mhd 1080p screen thats great led display..6gb of ram hard drive..9 volt battery all the bells and whistles..plug in lighted adapter..love it..cost double the cost of new one..I only paid for the old one..free ship and return....also webcan..so keep complaining...I have been buying from them for years and ..I love this new computer have had it for 2 months now..works great and I got the color for free too...probly twice the cost of the Inspiron 1545..so keep compaining....and let me know what happens..Barbara

My dear goodness, I thought it was just us! My parents got my sister and me Dell Inspiron 1545s for the new school year because our old laptops were near to trash. The second day of me using it, the touch pad began acting crazily. It would jump everywhere, and I couldn't do anything about. Then I noticed that my sister began complaining to me about the same thing! And today, September 10, 2010, her pad just stopped working all together. She cannot move the arrow at all anymore. I thought, perhaps her touch pad is dirty, so I cleaned it. It worked to a second, two at most. She has restarted, shut down, and hard rebooted, and still nothing. What is going on with Dell? If they cannot do anything about this, I am definitely telling my friend (Channel 11 News weather reporter) to bring this problem into the light. This is just ridiculous.

Yes that is exactly what my Dell Inspiron 1545 did..the mouse went everywhere opened programs just crazy...I changed the setting like Dell told me and nothing worked..thats when they sent the tech out...to my home and replaced the whole top on my laptop..Worked for two days then back to acting crazy again..I was sooo mad..so thats when I got the call about replacing it with a studio 1555 with all the upgrades...it took 2 weeks to get it but, worth the wait...I love this one so much..so keep complaining and get them to replace with a studio 15 or 1555..you will love it...yes it is ridiculous..that they don't fix this.

I must have talked to everyone is Asia..lol..lol...

They know they have a problem but, they keep selling them...I don't understand it either...contact your friend and see what he can do after you get new ones ..one for you and one for your sister..so you will get new ones or they just might refund your money..try to get new ones first...

Good luck, Barbara.....Dallas, Texas

I do hope you got this repaired.  I have had the same problem, was walked through diagnosing, changing the sensitivity etc.  Finally they told me to ship, sent me the box and replaced the whole mousepad/touchpad area.  It is still doing the same thing, going crazy, highlighting the screen blue, freezing up etc.  I have nothing but trouble and will be sure my next laptop purchase IS NOT from Dell.  Sad to feel this way, but very frustrated with it all.  Dell wake up, get it right.:emotion-42:

I bought a 1545 last week and within 10 minutes of booting up the I had the same mousepad problem. I uninstalled the touchpad in the device manager and let microsoft update install the generic driver from  their site and everything was fine.

Which Microsoft generic driver did you install?  I'm having the same trouble with my 1545 touchpad but want to make sure I'm installing the correct driver before uninstalling the ones that came with my laptop.

Thanks

I opened the device manager, selected Mice and other pointing devices, I then selected uninstall device which removed the touchpad from the system.

I then right clicked the ps2 mouse and selected update driver software from the internet. The driver installs automatically. Works fine.

Alex

Hi Alex,

In the event it doesn't work for me, is it a simple matter to reinstall the old driver?

Thanks

I just tried it.  The ps2 mouse was the only device listed under Mice and other pointing devices.  When I right clicked it and selected update driver software for the internet it looked for an update and came back saying I already have the most up to date version....

So, thanks for your help anyway.  As a very temporary fix I unplug the laptop and remove the battery for a few minutes.  This seems to be a temporary fix...although the problem comes back within days.

You should uninstall the ps2 mouse first and then reboot and do an update driver on the ps2 mouse .  I f you do not uninstall first the it will not update as it finds a suitable driver already exists. Sorry for not being clearer.

To install a working touchpad driver on the Inspiron 1545

Go to the Device Manager

Open the Mice and other pointing devices

Right click PS/2 Compatible Mouse

Select uninstall

Reboot

Go to the Device Manager

Open the Mice and other pointing devices

Right click PS/2 Compatible Mouse

Select Properties

Open the Driver tab

Click Update Driver

Click Search automatically for updated driver software

The driver will now be installed

The driver details should read;

Driver Provider:      Microsoft

Driver Date:            21/06/2006

Driver Version:       6.1.7600.16385

Digital Signer:        Microsoft

That is you done. Sorry if I was not clear in my previous instrucions. Please note that the device must be uninstalled or the driver will not be replaced.

Select the roll back driver option under the driver tab in the properties box of the ps2 mouse in the device manager.
