Dell Inspiron 1525 Touchpad (palm rest) issue

Question

I just recieved a laptop from my friend and he told me it was broke. Said the keyboard didnt work (water damage) to be exact. I dont know everything but i know a little and i can read, so i figured out how to replace it and bought a new one off ebay. After installing it iturn it on and it works great, i go to move the mouse and the touch pad doesnt work, I contact the kid who gave me it and he said that it didnt work either but he couldnt be exact on what happened.   My question is, could this be a hardware issue or will i have to replace the entire palm rest? That being said the buttons (left and right click) each work fine, its moving the cursor that doesnt work. Also, if i plug an external mouse in via USB it works fine.   Thanks in advance!

If the touchpad is faulty, the entire palmrest needs to be replaced.

thank you for your response! is there any steps i could try to do to insure that is infact faulty, and if i buy a new palm rest will that indeed fix it? I dont know too much, but is it for sure the top part and nothing internally?
