Thanks Pudgyone..

I change the setting on my router to 20mhz and  the setting on Intel 6200 adapter to 20mhz and that gave me faster file transfer speeds but when i change the Intel adapter back to auto and left the router on 20mhz i got faster still...

thanks again for the input day

Day: An update.

I've been changing the channel that my router broadcasts on and have found that channel 11 gives me the best speeds.

In my normal location for using this Dell I'm getting fairly consistent speeds of 300 mbps, it still fluctuates some but seldom goes below

240.  I'm extremely happy!!

I also tweaked my wife's Sony and improved her speed also.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed their experiences to this topic. I had not been aware of these issues until after I received and began setting up my new Vostro 3500 last week with the (now infamous) DW1501. Like everyone else has reported, I can not connect to a (new) Linksys E3000 router (simultaneous dual band) at any speed faster than 72 Mbps, even when only a few feet away. My 3+ year-old laptop had no problem connecting at 300 Mbps under the same conditions.

As soon as I ran a Google search, this thread came up and it was very enlightening. FYI, if you go to the Windows 7 x64 downloads page for the vostro, you can still find the original specs for the DW1501 stating it supports 5 GHz.. I saved the page as a PDF if anyone needs it.

Thanks to the discussion here, I contacted Dell support via email explaining the problem and requesting the Intel 6300 as a replacement. I received a response within a few hours (on a Sunday) stating that while they could confirm my purchase, since my system was so new, the contract was not yet in the system, but as soon as it could be verified (within 2-3 days), they would be sending out the Intel card. I will follow up on this thread and let you know the results.

I'm an IT consultant by trade with my own business for the last 6+ years, and Dell has consistently been the most reliable product out there for my clients. I am in hopes that Dell will not let me down with this issue.

Just to confuse the situation a little more, I am running a one day old XPS 15 Laptop.  It has an Intel 6200 wireless NIC and a Linksys E3000 router I get speed between 120 and 300 ms depending on where I am in my house.  However the speed is meaningless, when I connect to the Internet since my broadband connection is 30 ms, which becomes the limiting factor.   Therefore unless your laptop is on an internal network, or you have a viable Internet connection above 50 ms the speed is meaningless.  I use 802.11n not for its speed but rather for the improved range

yes that is true for the internet and internal network, I need the speeds to move large files from server to computers and laptops and everyone knows wireless is slower compared to wired over any network when transferring files so the wireless speeds have a vital role in my network...

"Therefore unless your laptop is on an internal network, or you have a viable Internet connection above 50 ms the speed is meaningless."  which is exactly what I posted

As a follow-up to my earlier post, Dell responded and overnighted me a refurbished Intel Ultimate 6300N (not an issue since I bought my Vostro as a refurb off Dell's Outlet Center). I received the new card yesterday, dropped it in, and installed the latest drivers from Intel. HUGE difference. In the same room as the router, I hit 300Mbps and downstairs 150Mbps. I attribute the slower speed downstairs (compared to my previous laptop, which had an Intel 4965 AGN) to the lack of a third antenna in the Vostro, something I will correct at a later date so I don't void the warranty.

I have just about had it will Dell's poor support. I have been on the phone for 3+ hours now I have the same issue as the orig poster. DW1501 in a studio 1558 it will only connect at 72mbps in 802.11 N mode. It will not go faster nor slower. I have been disconnected twice from support and have had to call back in and explain the issue over and over to 5 or 6 departments now. I told them about this post and none of them will look at it no matter what i say.

I'm a Network Engineer i manage 100's access points / routers. I have tried this computer along side many others and it's the only one with the issue. Matter of fact every dell with the 1501 this i can get my hands on will only connect at 72mbps which is not an issue for most people. I really hope someone at dell notices this post but somehow i doubt it.

All I'm asking for is someone who speaks English and knows something about networking other then reading off a screen I would hope that someone at Dell would know this stuff maybe I'm asking too much.

I know that the Intel card would fix the issue. please send me a card !!!!! I will let you know how this ends up.

Tyler.
