Most desktop/laptop PC's are I/O bound. Buy a Dell laptop w/a Solid State Drive and its "game over" from a performance perspective. I/O throughput is significantly faster than (2) 7200 rpm SATA disc drive w/RAID 0 configuration. Plus the laptop weighs less, is more portable and will enhance the user experience.

I purchased a Studio XPS 16 last February and it is the best home PC I have owned to date.

Dell's OEM Windows 7 build is relatively clean, much better than HP's.

I never owned a MAC and never will, which IMO is too expensive for a "niche" product.

Currently, I administer a couple of IBM POWER 6/7 servers (9117-MMA & 9179-MHB).

Avoid the Studio 1558 like the plague.  You can search these forums and others (notebookreview.com) to find the array of problems with this system.  I wish I had before I bought one in April.  See my post here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19338401/19726340.aspx for what I have experienced (including the joke they call "Dell Tech Support").

This was my third Dell laptop over the years - never again.
