New laptops do not have a drive letter for the Recovery partition. It is hidden as is the diagnostic partition so users cannot tamper with it. You do not manually access it. You must follow these directions to make a recovery disk. To check the partitioning of your new computer, type Disk Management in the Start box and click on Create Partitions..... that appears at the top left.
Dell laptops bought directly from Dell now have a small C partition for the system files and an empty D partition for all your data--files, programs, photos, etc. Not sure if your Costco dell computer will have the same partitioning.
Thanks anyway, I knew about registering with Dell for my Costco purchase...that is where the problem began through trying to register. It was through that process that the Dell website said that it wasnt valid or recognized. I tried it again (though on the Canada site where I am in Canada) but still same thing.
I had tried, upon recieving my computer, to make the recovery disk with those instructions as that was in the set up guide. That is where I ran into my problem. Thanks anyway, I appreciate the suggestions.
I have exactly the same problem with the error message, although did manage to identify that the service tag scanning is not recognised outside of the USA. Can anyone help me with the error message please?
I've been trying to create my recovery discs and tried to follow your directions (as per the above link) but the problem I have is that when I get to the "create system recovery media" page, it doesn't give me the option to highlight either Discs or USB Flash drive which means I can't go any further.
Do you have any other suggestions as to how I can create these recovery discs please? If it's any help, I bought my laptop direct from Dell but begrudge paying for a lengthy (and possibly very costly) telephone support call unless I have to!
Just wanted to let you know that my service tag issue seemed to have resolved itself. I stopped trying to register with Dell for a few days and today, tried again and now my service tag was recognized. I was just getting ready to call Dell about it but thought I would give it another go. So my advice, try again to see if it is recognized. I received my computer one and a half weeks ago...not sure why the delay, but at it is recognized now. I still have the same other problem with trying to make the recovery disks. I get to the same point as you, my screen wont let me select either option.

What model system is it? If there in fact a D: drive with a file in it that has the extension .wim?
For retail systems, you must register with Dell before the service tag will be recognized:

No D drive, just C.
