Depends on how the printer was installed. Make and model of the printer is helpful.

 

Also depending on the make and model of your computer and opertaing system. Virus protection and firewalls can block communications. Hopefully if you ask the kids, they can help you with installing the printer drivers on your computer. They are different things to look at, so in order to get things working, I would ask them first. They may just grab the printer disk out and install the drivers from the disk.
