This really worries me considering how badly I'll get beat if I break the nearly $600 dollar phone I bought direct from Dell with a 1 yr, who know what it covers warranty. I got a square trade warranty to cover what Dell wont just in case.
And, before you get too upset with Dell consider that you'd probably get the same response, if not worse, if you had an iPhone and cracked the screen.
oh man, that really blows !, is the touchscreen still working??, so Dell wont do anything???, there has been a couple more ppl on youtube that show their cracked screen but i thought they were just being idiots and trying to test the screen. let us know how everything goes.
If you feel unsatisfied with Dell's response you can always take legal recourse. I've seen enought cracked screen posts already that I'm worried about it myself and I wear mine tied around my neck (very noisy work environment) because i cant hear it from belt or pocket.
I too dropped my six day old Dell Streak, 12 inches onto a formica countertop. My gorilla glass held strong and there was no visible damage to the outer casing. However, the LCD screen is damaged. It started with a small ink blot at the point of impact and has spread. I now have vertical lines across the screen to the point I cannot see anything on the top half inch of the screen with more lines every day. If I orient the phone veritcally the screen roles. My device is slowly bleeding to death from an internal hemorrage of LCD fluid. One of the reasons I pruchased the Dtreak was the gorilla glass. I drop my phone all the time. Usually with little consquence but I did crack the screen on my HTC Hero. The LCD was fine and the phone still maintained all its function but its ugly. The gorilla glass is suppose to be able to with stand a fall from waist high but what is the point if the LCD brakes. When I contacted Dell I was told the warranty was void because I dropped it and there was not even anyone who could repair the phone. Now I am stuck with a phone that won't work and a two year contract with AT&T. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless they make an Otterbox for it. I had the Dell case on the phone. It's a joke. 20$ for a piece of plastic that only covers the back.
The screen on my dell streak has also cracked, it appears to have started from just above the charging point, it has not been dropped.....it was put on charge this moning then 10 mins later i noticed the crack, o2 arnt interested nor dell so i have sent an email to corning the makers of this so called unbreakable gorilla glass. This is the only reason i chose this phone...i will let you know what the outcome of this email is.
Why should i have to pay £25 excess on my insurance to get it repaired when it is susposed to be UNBREAKABLE AND SCRATCH RESISTANT
same problem. i cracked the lcd on mine. i thought fair enough i should have been more careful. so i phoned delll. i was FUUUMING. it wasnt covered by the warrenty even though its quite clearly a design flaw that the lcd should crack but the glass be fine. so i asked then, where can i send it to get it repaired.
the reply i got was. THERE ISNT ANYWHERE. dell doesnt even do repairs for the phone. REDICULOUS!!
Sorry, I don't know in which country you are living, but I'm quite sure in Europe the sentence ", so dell are under no obligation to fix it. " it's not true. Dell have the obligation to have repair pieces at least two years. Other topic is how much money they charge for the replacement pieces.
Anyway, I also have a Dell with broken screen and I sent the streak to repair 20 days ago and still waiting for feedback.
Sorry guys but I'm going to have to disagree with you here. It is not dells fault that you dropped the phone. It was accidental damaged caused by you, so dell are under no obligation to fix it. I can't believe people are calling it a design flaw. It is a flush mounted glass(!fragile!) screen that isn't designed to be dropped and it isn't advertised as such.
My last laptop broke because it got knocked off of the edge of the arm chair (just a few feet). It was supposed to be a tough alloy frame, but it bent on impact. It wasn't covered under warranty because it was just me being careless. End of the day, the glass is still paper thin and it's all relative. Even though it may be advertised as ultra tough, I can guarantee it is more along the lines of 'when compared to un-toughened glass of the same thickness'.
I never saw anything saying it was unbreakable either, any glass of this thickness would be fragile, just some more than others.
Finally, to all the people complaining, please use your common sense. Glass is fragile, and care should be taken with your gadgets. If you can't handle that fact then may I suggest one of these http://www.myinsulators.com/commokid/telephones/contemporary.htm other wise, man up, grow a pair and take responsibility for your actions.
I have same problem yesterday i drooped my phone on the floor and screen is completly cracked phone is working but it's look terrible and useless. But funny part is i bought him directly from dell web page and i cannot submit my service tag. So i called dell support and guess what lady told me that i am not even in the system i gave her everything my name, internet receipt number, order number she just said that she is really sorry but i am not in the system. So what now i'd like to send mobile to them (i have collect and return support) but without working service tag i can do nothing. So i have no idea what i should do
Mine whent to back to the service center on september 6th, came back unrepaired on september 24th, agreed for a replacement. The replacement never came.
Now waiting for a reimbursement form the phonehouse from where I bought the streak. almost 2 months now........
I m done with dell.....too bad the 5 inch screen was perfect for me. Will probably go back to HTC 4.3 inches screen. at least their customer service is OK.
I've got the dell streak back after one month, no repair, no new screen, no nothing. Speaking with someone told me that Dell doesn't want to repair the streak, if it's broken (at least the screen), the budget for the repair the mobile it's the same as new... conclusion: Never again will I buy Dell products.
Just one more thing... I found the screen replacement for the streak on ebay, it's about 150€. If Dell wants to repair the mobiles, giveorr take the reparation will be around 200€, not to buy a new mobile.
im gunna see if i can find that screen, since dell refuse clean up they're own mess and my warrenty according to them is allready void, im gunna give a screen replacement a go myself. my only concern about doing it is the touch thing, ive never replaced the screen on something before, i dont know were the touch sensitived is, is it in the lcd, or between the gorilla glass or... i dont know can anyone help with that. also could you send the link to the screen you found by any chance?
Same here: my service tag is not recognised and.. I cracked the screen :-(
And then the web site is too complex.. to much oriented on problems like virus removal.. you can't find the correct service.. they should have created a web site specific for mobile products... or even for the streak..
Not to say that it is quite "normal" for a mobile to fall down from pockets.. and with my previous phones nothing never happened to the phone..
My first Dell terrible, terrible experience! Not surprised Dell is doing bad business..
