You can return an unsatisfactory system for replacement within 21 days of shipment. That said, you're comparing a low-end new system with a high-end XPS - there will be compromises with the new system.
I think this is more of a difference between the new LED screen and the old LCD screen. My guess is the current XPS with the same screen would look the same.
I have an Inspiron 9400 and an XPS 1710 -- they have the same 17" screen WUXGA, different video card. As far as simple MS OFFICE stuff goes, they look identical.
So, the trade off is in the screen technology, I think -- not the lower/higher end issue.
Also, I can't get the STUDIO version from the same place I got my 7010, so oh well :)
