You need at least Windows XP SP2 for WPA.

The box ATT gave you is most likely a DSL modem and router in one. Getting another router will only add to your problems.

What wifi card do you have installed?

 outburst,

Is your wireless adapter enabled in the Bios?

Does your wireless adapter show up in the device manager? Is it enabled there?

Did you try...

 outburst,

If you're using XP SP2 or SP3, then you have WPA encription. There is no setting to change. The computer recognizes the encription from the wireless router.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager) Click on network, your network adapter and double click on it, then click advanced. Look for antenna diversity. Some have this and some don't If your adapter has this, then change the setting from Auto to Aux.

Also try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router, I use channel 11. I would change the SSID to make connecting easier.

I went to network and clicked advanced but that setting is not there....guess my version dont have that. as far as my network....i have at&t uverse and im not going to change the settings on it just yet because i have three other pc's that connect just fine. I dont want to screw that up. at&t support told me that we could configure my network to wep instead of wpa but i dont want to do that. security is a good thing.

I dont see why i cant get a cheap wireless rounter and connect to my residential gateway via ethernet cable and then connec to the new router with this pc via WEP setting. I am sending this message from the pc in question and im connected via Ethernet through my residential gateway.

 outburst,

There was a problemn with a certain wireless adapter, think it was the 1390 that had trouble connecting to WPA. It would connect to WPA2 but not WPA. If you do NOT have any other wireless devices, like printers, iPods, wireless phones, etc, then try using WPA2 security.

You could try running WinSock XP Fix and then see if the computer connects.

Is your wireless adapter set for DHCP?

What shows up when you're trying to connect using the wireless adapter, then type ipconfig /all     (space between the g and /)?

 outburst,

The wireless router should be fine. Wondering if a cheap wireless USB adapter would help you connect to WPA Security.
