i have a 5150 also. pretty much same problem. fan kicks up pretty high in games. after a while, sometimes it just shuts off.
also when the computer has been on for a really long time, it heats up quite a bit and the fan kicks on pretty high -- just with standarn, non cpu intensive programs. no shut off though, just lots of heat.
i was able to "calm" the computer down a bit by changing the setting to "minimal power management" under the power options in the control panel.
anyways, my question is, will dell do an exchange for a desktop or some other computer given this problem. it does seem like after dell takes a computer back, the problem remains unfixed.
OK today is december 29th and I have just recieved my laptop back from dell (almost 1 month to the date) and here is the deal. I have a new system board, CPU,Heatsink/fan, and bios were updated (to a21). The computer works fine now in games but I do have a couple questions/concerns. My first concern is that I had a 3.06ghz p4 and now the system description (from the control panel) shows intel mobile pentium 4 2.66ghz and down just below it states 1.59ghz and 512mb ram. Well? I updated to bios A29 and that was without a hitch but the system description is unchanged. Any ideas? I have my new ram here to install (2x512mb crucial sticks) and the 64mb video card that came as an option with the 5150 (I had bought the 32mb for some odd reason..) What are my options as far as the processor deal? Also can I install the new parts or should i wait for the processor deal to get worked out. The VC is from Dell and the memory is the same stuff that dell uses. Thanks.
You chaps check to see if no dust is blocking the fans. I had that problem wif my I8600 even thought the DIAG. My fans were ok but my system was heating up until I removed all the dirt thats was blocking the air intake and outtake.
Well guess what folks- Dell messed up again. The computer doesn't randomly restart anymore but then again dell only put in a 2.66ghz processor. I called up tech support and "soo sorry but we made a mistake!" So now it goes back- for how long this time?! I am really mad at this point. I tried to get them to install my video card since it was there mistake and "no we can't do that". So I am installing my memory tonight and waiting for airborne.
I am not going to remove my HD- the timing with dell will already be close if the promise I have been given holds out. This computer is my college computer and I should have it back next friday morning- which is good b/c I leave next friday afternoon. Now I do have 2 questions.. first off- Does anyone feel that I should not install my new video card (the go 5200 64mb) before I send this thing back? I bought the card from dell but am worried that they may take inventory of my system when they go to put in the new processor and think they had given me the 64mb video card and wrong processor last time? I have the time now to do it- why not? Also my 2nd question although this question may be more of morals as opposed to yes/no. I have the 2.66 p4 in my laptop now (which will be swapped out to the 3.06 that I had originally) My roomate has inherited my old ram for his dell 8200 notebook and sparked the idea of swapping out processors.. He currently has a 2ghz p4. I am thinking that I may be able to swap out processors with him and still get my new processor... I will be right there if I go ahead and install the video card.. my only questions are compatibility and do I need anything special (I am very familiar with desktops but am quite vague when it comes to notebooks). I looked through the users guide and the only out of the usual thing for me was the thermal grease application (personally don't use for desktops). Any body know if his comp would support 2.66 and if I could/should help him out.
I am sorry for the long ramble..
1. Could I go on and put in my new video card?
2. Could I swap processors with a Dell 8600 and still get my new one?
Can't tell you what a relief it is to know there are others with the same problem. My 5150 has just started playing up, overheating like crazy, not shutting down but is causing all the systems to run slow, I'm trying to write a flippin essay for next week and I can't get into it now because windows runs so slow. I havn't heard back from Dell, I sent them an e-mail about it, is that the best way for contacting them or should I phone emm? So if this is such a widespread problem, shouldn't there be a solution for this which isn't going to take more than a year to fix?
Well anyways nice to know it aint just mine which has packed up.
latest update with dell... Dell recieved my laptop on the 2nd of january, Its now 13th of january and my notebook is on parts hold again.. told to wait another week or two.... Its just great to have the laptop in the shop for almost 2 months while at college. I keep having to borrow everyones computer- GETTING FRUSTRATED! The dell guy said that if I don't have it by next week I can call up and get a replacement system, and when mine does show up swap over my memory, HD. I put my video card in my laptop (upgraded to 64mb) and I would haveta swap that too. Dell tried 2 proccessors but they were wrong??? I dont understand how this is so difficult! Just thought yall may want an update.
Higney85, how ironic your situation is compared to mine. Dell replaced my laptop with the wrong cpu too. I wonder how many inspiron 5150 owners have been scammed by dell. When I called them to inform them about the cpu error, 2 techs tried to bs me into saying that the heat was the cause. But since i've had 8 years of experiance of computers, I didn't fall for it. I seriously hope my part doesn't become on hold again also.
Well folks.. Its january 21st 2004 and STILL NO COMPUTER... It has been on "parts hold" since the 4th of january but now I at least have the full story on why... Dell recievesd a shipment of processors labeled "p4- 3.06" turns out that they were only 2.6 P4.. mislabeled by intel. Now the tech is gunna e-mail me back tomorrow and give me a realistic date. I am at about 2 months now w/o a computer (o wait I have it for 3 days before sendind it back the second time
. College is kinda hard w/o a notebook- especially when it is needed for CLASS! Does Dell do anything like gift certificates for this kind of haggling?
you should contact the Better Business Bureau and write Mike Dell a letter.
I wrote Dell a letter when i was having dell issues and i got a phone call from a woman at the executive offices there....my situation had been resolved by then though.
also....have you tried posting your problem on the support forum board? thats where i got the best results.
I feel your pain Higney85. I was more lucky that I didn't get put on parts hold when they stuck in the wrong processor, but they messed up on the shipping in my case. Its been a week since they sent to my home address even though I told them not to and they still havn't resolved it.
Crud... this sounds bad. I've been following the 'overheating 5100 thread' for some time. I didn't think there would be a 5150 thread. I've had the 5150 since July, and so far no CPU overheating problems. I guess I'm lucky. I don't use it that much though... maybe a few hours a day (1-2), and I'm usually just surfing the web. I hope mine doesn't start to overheat. Apparently, the 5100s have a different processor than the 5150s. I was hoping that would buffer me from the problems they've been having.
I'm pretty sure my video card overheated and was fried, but Dell replaced it. Somebody said that they bought the nVidia 5200 64 meg card. How much did it cost? How did you order it? I've been toying with the idea of getting one of those and swapping out the ATI m9 card I've got.
In the 5100 thread, they say the problem with those is that dust collects on the heatsink and prevents heat disapation. The quick fix they've been using is blowing it out with canned air every week or so. They've been monitoring the CPU temp with a program falled FanGui. Apparrently, it was made for the Latatude or something but it works on our Inspirons. I've been running it on my 5150 to watch for CPU temp changes. So far so good.
From Intel's site, the max temperature my CPU is supposed to be (P4 Moblie 3.06 gHz w/o HT), without causing problems is 74 degrees Celsius. If it hits 100 C, Intel recommends that the power to the processor be cut in under 500 ms or something to prevent perminate processor damage.
I've fried CPUs on desktops before by overclocking them. (Or when the CPU fan broke). It seemed that after I got the CPU back to a good cool temperature, it would still periodically reboot. Sometimes just replacing the processor worked, and sometimes it was the motherboard. Anyway... sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps a little.
