Adding Ringtones on the Venue Pro

I have the same problem. I updated to the 7.5 frimware through Zune. What I would like to know is, do you have to subscribe to Zune in order to get the rintones on the Dell Venue Pro? Please....Anyone....Help! I shouldn't have to be this hard. Maybe I should have bought an iPhone.

Yes you can!

There are 2 tricky points.

1) Prepare an MP3 file with max. length of 39 SECONDS

2) When you are about the transfer your max. 39 secs MP3 file on Zune, go to the properties of the MP3 file (on Zune) and change its GENRE (whatever it is) to be RINGTONE. Save and then copy it to your DVP. It will appear under ringtone menu with a title of custom ringtones on your DVP.

That's it!

I would like to say that there is much more to it than this. For one you cannot shorten your songs to make ring-tones in zune, you have to cut them from an outside source, then the trick is attempting to get the files into your zune program, because they are cut or shortened zune will not import them from any other files even tried to force it and zune tries to play it and gives an error...because it is too short, even if the genre is changed to ringtone befor it is shortened in an outside mp3 cutting program, it does not matter, mp3, wav file, Zune will not import the shortened song.  this is so frustrating, such a nice smart phone and you cannot put a lousy ring tone on it that you want because Zune controls it all, you cannot put anything on the phone with out zune and then zune wont let you import whatever you want because it is so limited in intelligence, it will not import a shortened file because it cannot play it like a standard mp3 song even though the extension is mp3. 

This is absurd and I should be able to control my phone through my windows program on my personal computer not have a program that is not user friendly control my phone.  I can have any ringtone on my cheap nokia flip phone but not on my DVP...wow...

sorry, I am just  a BIT disappointed in the fancy phone of mine and I cant have my tones that I want.

If any tech or it person knows how i can access my DVP with out zune in my PC as I can most other devises, flash, mp3 player, camera ect, please let me know.

You're going about the wrong way. I was frustrated when I first purchased my phone. Had to wait until the "Mango" update came out. Make sure your phone is updated to the latest "Mango" update. I use Audacity software to clip the length of any mp3, .wav or iTunes song. Save the ringtone in your "Zune" file under My Music. It should show up within Zune as a duplicate of the song title. I suggest you give it a short different name to find it when you open Zune. You much find the file in your Zune software, change the properties of the "Genre" to ringtone. Spell it exactly as I did. Then sync it to your phone. You should see a new folder pop up "Custom", in your Ringtone folder on the DVP. Then you should have your Ringtone. Make sure it is less than 40 seconds long. You may have to experiment as I did. Hope this helps. BTW...I Googled info on how to do this. There are many sites that can help you with this on the Internet. I found the best help on Youtube.

I must correct you...the spelling of RINGTONE should be "ringtone" or it won't work. FYI

I wrote it with capital letters to just IMPRESS it, just like GENRE! BTW, even if I change genre to "ringTone" (i had done it once accidentally) it still works!:)) FYI!  ;) I haven't tried all capitals but the best approach is to follow the same format used for the other default genres, that is all small letters as you suggested.

Additional infomation for shielahsw: There is an alternative way to reach your phone and copy files etc. without Zune. But first, it will not solve your problem because your file will not be recognized as a ringtone. That alternative way generally helps to use your phone like a mass storage device, but not a player. Windows Phone 7.x works completely different than Windows Mobile 5.x, 6.x versions. So I know what you meant very well. Second, I am not really sure but your device may go out of warranty! I

If you upgraded your phone to Mango, the solution way that we suggest should 100% work for your ringtone problem.

when I got my phone last month I updated it, it has the latest update, I did change the genre to ringtone, I used and outside program to cut my sons with and mad sure they were under 40 sec, they would only save to a wav file, windows media player will play them but Zune wont, they wont even import into Zune even if i tell Zune where to search for them at, I cannot save them into Zune because when I try to save and look for the Zune file it brings up the Zune program but wont allow me to put it anywhere in there, i cannot drag it there either, I tried to change the extension to am MP3 then Zune will attempt to play but wont I think because it was in a wav file to start, I already had changed the genre to ringtone before I even shortened the songs, I gave them a different name by putting a letter in front of their actual names to differentiate them, I did all this before, they will not import to my Zune file, i spent hours doing this last week, before I posted,sorry I am frustrated, I am not a tech, but I have done enough with computer and issues that I am not an idiot too.  I used free ringtone maker that I found through cnet, I am running windows xp which should not matter, media player will play these files which is windows, but Zune will not play them, Zune will not even recognize them to import.  I see that Zune will not take  wav file, is there a way it convert it from wav to mp3, just changing the extension does not do it.  so, I did..was already upgraded, I had changed the genre...what else...and if i could drop and drag my  "ringtone" file that is on my desktop now as a wav files are you telling me they wouldn't recognized in my phone, they are short and genre as ringtone...

Go to Marketplace and get "Free Ringtones".  it has a hugh selection of ringtones that can be downloaded.

I got it had to download a different editing program and put it into a seperate file on my desktop, could not save it directly to zune...but I got this to work...

Did you try to edit your MP3s with the FREE audio editor program: "Audacity"? When you finish editing, just "export" the file as MP3 and in the new coming little window specify genre to be ringtone. And also, in this little window, specify song name, artist etc, because Zune needs that information too, instead of file name only. And copy it under My Music directory. Zune should automatically recognize it in this way.
