1.  Yes.  It'll run slower but it will work.

2.  No.  Try either swapping the modules or replace the one that tests faulty with another.  If you see the same error on the same socket, it means the socket is bad.

3.  No.

Thanks for such a fast reply! That's great, thank you.  I take it that if a socket is bad then that means the main board would need replacing to completely solve the problem ?

Yes, that or the socket would need to be replaced, but the price for that will be high enough that you may as well replace the board.

He's up and running with one memory stick for now.    Will try out another memory stick in the socket at the weekend.

Sorry back again with another question.  The laptop has dual processors and I wondered if that might mean that each processor is linked to a specific memory stick?

No, that is not the case.  The system has a dual channel memory controller, so you lose a bit of performance running a single module - but neither CPU core is linked to either memory module.
