Unfortunately it did not fix my problem, I still get the first error. But, the sensor was listed in Control Panel-Hardware-Location and other sensors. And it is checked off as well. But still giving me problems.
Dell has posted the drivers for the Duo on the Duo support page, I would try installing the sensor from there and see of that corrects your issue. Almost seems that a driver file is corrupt or you have a conflict with something else.
Could you possibly give me a link to the support page? I am on it now and it says "Sorry, Could not find any drivers for your system". I typed in my service number but nothing pops up under drivers and downloads.
Also, it works when it wants to. Sometimes when I boot up the Duo it'll be working, but then if I restart i'll get the error again.
I've been having this same issue. I have tried installing both the drivers you suggested and the ones on the dell site. The driver on dell's site actually removed the sensor and I had to run the program again to put the sensor back on. It appears to be enabled (box is checked next to the sensor) but when I click on the sensor name, it says that the sensor is not connected. I have tried multiple system restores, almost back to the point when I first took it out of the box, but nothing seems to be working. Any ideas as to what might fix this? Immediately after a restore I get a pop up with the same message that was in the first post...that I have to enable the sensor, but I didn't really do anything to disable it, so I'm just not sure what to do.
Not actually sure what may be going on given the details of your issue - almost seems as though the sensor is buggy or perhaps they revised the hardware without first providing updated drivers - I would not think that they would have a revision as of yet.
I never used the Dell provided driver, so not sure if it installs the same as the factory image provided drivers.
My suggesstion would be to totally remove the driver so that you have a yellow exclamation in the device manager
Install the Dell driver and see if it performs properly after a clean installation
The drivers and registry keys I uploaded are captured from the Factory install and require that you copy the folders as noted in the text file to the proper directory as well as merge the registry keys.
There is an executable the must run on boot for the magnetometer to work, but still should not prevent anything from working properly.
I do not have my Duo with me today or I could give you more detail. Given that you have come just short of doing a factory restore and still have problems, you may want to bite the bullet and do just that to rule out a hardware malfunction. No need to spend hours trying to fix something when the hardware is faulty.
Ok, I will try to remove and then reinstall the sensor with the dell drivers, I think I have tried that, but I will most certainly try again. Thankfully I didnt have much installed since I just got it for christmas, so going back to factory restore wont be a big issue. I think our next try after all of that is to do a clean reinstall of everything to see if that fixes the issue.
Thanks for the help. I will try this out tonight since I don't have the duo with me at the moment.
The factory restore worked (at least for now)! After I did the restore, the windows start up came up like when I first took it out of the box. When I tried to flip the screen, a pop up came up asking me if I wanted to enable the sensor, and now the screen rotates like it should.
Its not a driver issue, its a heat issue, for you folks haveing issues, turn it of till its cool, and it will work just fine. Dell you guys screwed up bad for not testing the heat issue first before sending this out. There is not a driver out there to fix this.
hi EINTHECORGI, can you tell me how you perform a factory restore? I am trying to find out how to get to the recovery partition. many thanks in advance.
That is for windows 7, but there is a link at the top to change your operating system. The backup piece is at the top and the restore piece is at the bottom of the article. There is also a link on that site specifically for inspiron's, so that might work as well. It's in the orange shaded area at the top, but I think it points you the same way.
Otherwise, I think I may have just gone back to the restore point in the control panel and restored back to the first one available as that was how I got it out of the box.
EDIT: Actually, I think I just did the factory image, the other restore points still weren't fixing the problem.

If you can provide anything that supports this, then I will be glad to be one of the people to suggest your response as the answer. In trying to see if I could verify, I left i8kfangui running the fan on high after startup when it was working, and now though it still feels cool, it has eventually stopped working, still your answer is plausible. Also if this is a design issue by Dell, then we have 90 days to return these to them and move on to something that works without problems, might as well do that if we know this is the issue.
I had the same problem where the accelorometer stopped working. I tried disbale/enable etc etc, but it would not come back. I turned the machine off (unplugged from mains as well) and after about 30 mins when I turned it on it worked again. This might not be a heat issue, it might also be some gate latching or something similar. It certainly got fixed by just leaving the machine off for a while.

It looks like you have the driver installed but are missing the registry entries that coincide with the drivers.
Please download the driver and registry entries I posted here. You may only need the registry files.
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/m/laptop/19790638.aspx
This method and drivers will work under 7 Home, 7 Pro and 7 Ultimate.
Post back if that does not solve your issue, and I will try and help if I can.
