Thank you Pudgyone.

My regional settings are for UK, I have tried setting them to others, forbFrance and for Spain where channel 13 is allowed, but with no success.

On further investigation, going through Control Panel >Wireless Configuration Utility settings and opening up the details of the 1370 Mini-PCI Card with which the computer was supplied, it shows that it only supports channels 1-11.

Since this was supplied to me direct in England, from their base in Ireland, I am going to challenge them on the fact that they supplied me with a product  "Unfit for Purpose" , that is not completely equipped for Europe and demand a Mini-PCI Card that will allow me to connect to all the European permitted channels.

If you are in a position to back me up on this I would be most obliged.

I have just spent 45 minutes on the phone to various departments of Dell, who were very polite, but stonewalled me all the way.  The final verdict is that the Inspiron 2200 which I have can NOT connect to channel 13 with a different WLAN card, or even with an USB dongle and since the PC is about 5 years old, they will offer me no compensation.  Looks like a new computer and it will not be a Dell...
