Adding a second Hard Drive to an Inspiron 2600 using a Custom made caddy

Hi all  This is my first post with the community so be nice!!I I have an old Inspiron 2600 which I want to upgrade with a SSD drive. As you all know SSD is expensive so I want to keep my old drive and replace it into the optical drive. I purchased a special optical drive caddy for just the job and even managed to fit it into the computer and get it to turn on. Unfortunately that is as far as I have gone. The caddy drive is not being picked up in Windows XP. Worse it always stalls my laptop on the startup logo screen. The detailed startup screen show that the two drives are initalized with their serial numbers appearing on screen but the screen appears to be static. Attempts to enter the bios are impossible. Does anybody know if the Inspiron 2600 is capable of taking a second hard drive or does the nature of DVD controller prevent anything else being placed there???  Please help me...I have contacted the manufacturers of the caddy but they don't seem to know what to do...I don't wish to return it as that would prove costly. (I live in ireland and the manufacturer live in LA) Kudos in advance if you can help me!!!

The system was not designed to take two hard drives. It is very possible the CD/DVD drive is designed to be the slave - you might have success if you jumper the hard drive as a slave (finding jumpers to fit a 2.5" drive may not be easy though).
