Reinstall the original memory.  Does the flashing stop?  If so, try one of the new modules at a time until you determine whether one is faulty or both are simply not compatible.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that 1645 does work with 8GB just fine.

I have reinstalled the original ram and computer is working fine at the moment. However as I have mentioned in my original post, I need to know what the diagnostic lights mean. It looks as if I have to get in touch with dell directly.

Oysterisk, where did you buy the ram from?

Came with the comp directly from Dell.

And to answer your original question. This is the best description I could find:

Memory modules are detected, but a memory configuration or compatibility error exists.

* Ensure that no special memory module/memory connector placement requirements exist (see Memory Installation Guidelines).

* Verify that the memory modules that you are installing are compatible with your computer (see Memory Installation Guidelines).
* If the problem persists, contact Dell (see "Contacting Dell" in your Owner's Manual).

This was actually quoted for a different model, but the lights were described in XPS series section so should be the same.

Hi,

I'm just about to do the same. Can one of you very capable people confirm the answers to the following before I start?

1) Initially the Dell Studio XPS 1645 comes with 4GB... how is this installed? 1x4GB or 2x2GB?

2) Where are the two RAM slots, Ihope one's not under the keyboard like it was on Inspiron models?

3) Does anyone have a link to a site which is confirmed to sell compatible memory, or even know what type 4GB module would work (i.e. manufacturer product code...etc).

Thanks so much

Paul
