Remove the battery and unplug.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.

Verify that the LED on the adapter is ON before you plug in the notebook end. If it's not, the adapter is bad - replace it.

If the adapter is OK, try powering up without the battery.  If it will, then try with the battery.  If it will with the battery removed but won't with the battery in, the battery is bad - replace it.

If it won't power up at all, one of a number of things could be wrong - the mainboard will need repair or replacement.

Mine did the same thing. It was running off the power adapter and everything went dark. Only had 9 hours of use in the 4 months I had it. When I unplug the power adapter, it would light up. But go off when plug back in. So I call Dell 1-800-624-9896 Hardware Warranty Support and after a few moments, was told that it was the Motherboard that has die. Mine was still under warranty and they are sending me a box to send it for repair. Hope it will be a better board and last longer. I do know about keeping the ventilation clear so not to run hot. Good luck to everyone that has the same problem.
