mr_ocnitsa:

Try pressing your F2 key during boot to enter your system's BIOS Setup program. If the problem is noticeable here, it is likely hardware related. Your LCD will probably need to be replaced to correct the issue.

To have service arranged,  you can email mobile_support@dell.com. Make certain to include a brief description of your issue, with your service tag and the troubleshooting steps you have followed.

The problem sounds similar to the one that I have with my Inspiron 8000, Windows XP.  When booting up, instead of a true black background, it is reddish.  When a window is opened, instead of a clean white background it has a blueish tint to it.  The problem will come and go with no apparent changes, i.e. it can start off this way and go back to normal or it can be running normal and than go into this mode.   There doesn't have to be any keyboard activity for this to happen either way.

Dell indicated the display was bad and had it replaced by Dell.  When I received it back, it seemed to be ok except I would see it go into this mode very briefly for the first few months.  Than it started to become more prevalent.  This is a 14.1" SXGA+ LCD.

It doesn't seem like the LCD is bad due to two reasons: 1) replaced it once and the same exact problem came back almost immediately.  2) The problem will come and go without any relationship to normal hardware problems, i.e. any relationship to when it happens which is associated with heating of components, mechanical movement, power, etc.

In fact while typing this, the problem that has been present for multiple uses over the last few days, has now suddenly went back to normal (open window is white background instead of a white/blueish background in which the blueish runs through the letters too).

Even though an external monitor always works fine, I replaced the video card but this didn't do anything.

Is there any chance the video driver for Windows XP has a flaw in it when driving the LCD instead of an external monitor, since the Inspiron 8000 was before Windows XP came out and there were video driver updates for Windows XP.

For whatever it is worth, I too have updated to WinXP on an I8000 and have noticed no color difference in any mode at all.

Topol,

One more question, which video driver does the Inspiron have the nVidia GeForce2 or ATI Mobility 3 / 4?

Topol,

Curious to know what LCD display type (or max. pixels configuration) does the Inspiron 8000 have; XGA, SXGA, SXGA+, UXGA?

As an FYI for anyone in the future who has a similary problem, it ended up being the LCD Flex Cable assembly.  When I replaced this the problem has not not occured.
