MD3200 Convert RAID 10 to RAID 5 or 50
Hi.
WE have an MD3200 that has a disk group of RAID 10, but we need extra space and want to increase the size.
Can we convert the Disk group from RAID 10 to RAID 50? I can see on the Array manager you can convert the group to RAID 5, would this make us loose our data?
Thanks
Johann

You may be able to convert to raid 5, but raid 50 isn't an option on this unit (unless you were to run 2 raid 5's and then a software stripe across them (really bad idea)).
I'd check your IO (read/write ratio, randomness, average/mean write size, etc). Then engage a performance consultant and get some feedback about whether the performance difference could impact you (significantly). You can change to a raid type with more space usually (e.g. from raid 10 to raid 5), but not the other way around.

From what I know? The conversion to RAID5 should work fine, the storage can stay up and running during the change even.

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes! I'm considering moving from RAID 10 to to RAID 5 as well, I believe it doubles my storage space but I wonder if I'll notice the performance hit.
