Forget it. Apparently the service manual for the 3x50 series doesn't exists. You can see here some of the troubles others has gone through: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/67404-35-changing-hard-drive-dell-vostro-3450.
So You are probably absolutely correct in Your asumptions: You're not meant to do any service on the 3x50 series by Yourselv.
So if You want to change the harddrive , buy another brand.
I can see that the harddrive replacement is an extremely difficult procedure. I've got an 3550 and the harddrive replacement takes less than a minute. 3 screws and the buttom cover is removed. 2 screws and the harddrive is out.

Yeah, in the mean time I figured out that only in Vostro 3450 you can't do it. However, 3350 does indeed have a user replacable HDD.
