When I call to order the card I'm always given to these three responses;
1) You cannot upgrade laptop video cards.
2) I can upgrade the part but it's going to cost $600.00
3) They can upgrade the card, and have it installed by a technician for 270.00 total.
Now, I have only spoken to two people who have been able to find the card. There seems to be a database error as far as I can tell. Either that, or the Customer Service Reps don't understand the difference between the 460m and 460 desktop version of the card.
My Dell Preferred Account is fine, yet the guy I'm dealing with is telling me he can't process orders from Canada unless I send a copy of a bill, and two pieces of government ID to some place in Texas, USA.
There's obviously something wrong here. I mean, you do not need to be a rocket scientist to understand that having to mail information to Texas from another country is a little off.
If someone can help me with the part number of the card, or if anyone has had success getting the upgrade, please let me know. I've been fighting with this for almost 2 months now.
Additionally, Dell doesn't have a customer complaint number either.
I'll stop here - you're looking for the answer you want to hear, not the truth. If it's true you've seen "dozens of sites that list the card, which is being sold apart from laptops", then why bother asking questions - just buy it, and either install it yourself,or pay $75 to have a shop install it for you?
As for the snide comment, it's not welcome and it's out of order.
You're bending the truth to fit your agenda - I hope things work out well for you, and if you DO manage to find this card for $270 installed - then go for it and post the link as to where you bought it. It would greatly help many others.
Okay, you have 73,000+ posts. That, in and of itself, is a little weird. Simply posting a link to some website hardly amounts to anything substantial.
I can do the exact same thing. To be honest, I've been to literally dozens of sites that list the card, which is being sold apart from laptops, from anywhere around 300 dollars at launch, down to about 150 dollars at current prices.
And the 200 dollars IS NOT for the desktop card. I have an email from the CSR.
Well, I figured everything out and I'll be ordering the GPU next week, plus installation, from Dell for $270.00. I'll be more to post screen shots for ya.
It's not, on this model - it is a separate card. But, since the card is well over $400 even used, there's no way it's going to be purchased for a total of $270.

So, this is what is happening.

And you are basing this assumption on which set of criteria? Do you have solid facts?

$200 is for a desktop card -- it won't come anywhere near buying a notebook card, which is a proprietary part.
Here are examples of USED cards -- which are $400-500+ -- and older ones at that, though for the M17x.

So, if they're offering a new card for $600 - it's in line with what you should expect. The other price isn't realistic.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying.
I have two different price quotes from various CSRs. One price is 600.00, and the second quote is 200 plus a 70 dollar installation fee.

The card is likely on the order of $600 -- the added fee is for installation.

I think you're dreaming. The GPU is made onto the motherboard.
