Welcome to the Community. Have you tried disabling Avast and checking, most of the antivirus softwares can cause this. Click on start, run, type msconfig, click on startup tab on top, and uncheck anything to do with Avast, click on the services tab on top, and uncheck Avast over there as well, click apply and restart.
Can you run a scan on your computer, using Malwarebytes. Use the below link to download and install it, do a update before running the scan. This will remove the malware as well.
thanks Royan. I went through the msconfig process you mentioned. They were already unchecked. I just rebooted and it hung up during shut down. This time it was trying to install an update but it didn't complete it. I had to hard reboot. then it wouldn't start back up. After the initial Dell screen and then a windows start up screen then nothing but black. It took 3 more times trying to restrart (from system manager) for it to come back up. Can't access external drives. Thanks again for the advise.
I would try an absolute clean install, it could may be some driver conflicts with the installation of Windows 7 SP1. I found that going from factory settings then installing SP1 without IE9 degraded my performance. Installing IE9 kinda fixed it but it would crash playing games and some problems with Corel WinDVD.
Follow the in depth instructions in the link below for performing an absolute clean install below, get the drivers from the Dell Website incase they are newer. Essentially install Windows, then SP1, then IE9, then the drivers in the correct order. See if that helps...
I'm wondering if this might not be my only recourse now. I tried the first step of the process involving Belarc Advisor and it stops at 24% and freezes up my computer. I'm not sure I can continue without the product key codes etc. any other way to get them, given that Belarc is putting up a fight?
Thanks for the help guys! I really appreciate the you taking the time to answer. Best Buy's Geek Squad diagnosed the laptop and determined it had a bad hard drive. Thankfully it is under warranty and I backed everything up. Thanks again.
i purchased the new dell inspiron n5110 ( I7, 6 GB, 640 GB) , 20 days ago, and it has following problems from the first day,
1) Laptop speed is slow
2) It hangs up for a while and then works fine
3) whenever i open the NVIDIA 525MT G FORCE Control pannel, it opens verly slowly, many times NOT RESPONDING error..and when it opens it accept commands very late.
i did restore my computer to factory setting yesterday from the shop where i purchased this one....
speed is 50 % better , & no hangup problem yet, but i havn't updated windows to install SP1 n i have deleted MCAFEE nd now using BITDEFENDER total security 2011....is this software good in ur opinion? and plz tell me abt how i can increase systems performance .......with i7,6gb,640gb
I have never used BITDEFENDER Total Security 2011 so I cannot personally advise it or not. A good place to look is CNET. There is an "editor review" which is generally worthless and a "user review" which is an average of all users ratings.
Here alot of people review the software. In this case as with most security software it has 3 stars. Half of the people find it amazing and give it 5 stars the other half find it terrible and give it 1 star.
McAfee for example has a 1½ average user rating. Not so many people find it amazing.
The three I use together are:
• Malwarebytes' Antimalware (frequently recommended throughout the Dell forums) has a 4½ star rating. There is a free version which you have to manually run and update but otherwise fully functional or a pro version which offers protection all the time (realtime protection). The pro version costs £20 and never expires, it is well worth it.
• Microsoft Security Essentials has a 4 star rating. This is free.
• Windows 7 Firewall Control has a 3½ star rating. The free version of this suffices.
Spybot Search and Destroy is another one I've recently been recommended it has a 4 star rating but I have not decided whether I like it or not.
I have installed the 4 above currently. I have wrote about these and other software in the Useful Software link (at the bottom).
I would recommend you to try and install the following:
It is better to install the standalone ones opposed to the windows update, it just works better most the time. Generally it is better to install these before the system drivers but if you are using the factory settings that is not possible.
Is performance still acceptable after installation of these? No random crashes when playing a game?
Maintenance software is also recommended. CCleaner and Defraggler (links in the useful software) are good, free, easy to use utilities. CCleaner cleans out the junk of your system, temporary files, etc. which can recover system performance. You can guess what the "C" in front of cleaner stands for. It has also an inbuilt registry cleaner which seems to work (unlike most other registry cleaners which break the system). Defraggler defrags your drive, i.e. removes fragmented files/reorders them so they don't get in the way and slow things down so's to speak.
Edit: I recommend running ccleaner and defraggler periodically, something like once a week to once a month depending on how much you use your computer.
The useful software link below has the download links of alot of the free software I use and so,me others that I find really handy. At the top everything is listed with download links and price if applicable. Below that I write a brief description about most the things and say why I like it/ how to use it.
After installing Service Pack 1, did you Install Internet Explorer 9? Service Pack 1 seems more stable if Internet Explorer 9 is there aswell.
Also I have found for performance wise any ATI/Realtek software should be uninstalled before installing Service Pack 1.
Computer>Uninstall or Change a Program
Right click Computer and select properties and then device manager
Go to display adaptors, right click the ATI device and the select uninstall
Ensure you check the box which says "Delete the driver software for this device" then press ok. Repeat the same for any ATI/AMD High Definition Device Under Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Restart your computer, don't worry if the display looks a bit bad. We'll fix that later.
Install the Service Pack 1 Standalone the 907 MB file you have. Install Internet Explorer 9. Then reinstall the AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 550v.
i have read the ratings of CNET abt bitdefender and found satisfactory, i also downloaded the service pack1 which u mentioned above and this file was 903 mb. i installed this, but my computer is performing again slow after installing this one, before i had sp1 updated from microsoft windows automaticaly, i removed frm my pc...im really upset bcs of my pc speed, i think i have purchased a wrong brand laptop, i have heard dell's name alot before thats y purchased thier laptop, but i realized that dell losing its quality n geting his name only by marketing, QUALITY WISE DELL IS VERY POOR.....................
im thinking of returning this laptop back with money diff. nd will purchase asus i7....wht u guide ??
thx....sys is very slow with 6gb, 640 gb, i7...........

Power down you're system and hold down F12. Select the diagnostics to see that there is no hardware fault.
Like I said it might be a software problem. Particularly with Windows 7 SP1. I would reinstall everything from scratch, see the guide below.

Okay ignore the ATI part then but go for the Service Pack 1 and IE9 install.
Do you have alot of programs on your computer?
Is your CPU and RAM usage high?
