I don't think your system came with Windows 7, did it? I upgraded my Dell Studio 1737 to Windows 7 64-bit.

One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.
If you have already run the Troubleshooting Wizard, you might want to check the hardware documentation for more information about diagnosing the problem.
No, the system didn't come with Windows 7. I updated it. Unfortunately I'm unable to run the troubleshooting wizard. I've tried using the download manager on the Dell website but it won't load. I had a feeling the webcam went bad. It's an internal webcam and unless I want to take the computer apart (which I don't) i'll probably just buy an external webcam. Thanks for the info.
This is the message I'm getting from Windows 7. There is an unknown device.

The webcam was working fine and all of a sudden stopped working. I then got the message the computer was looking for a compatible device.. I've tried calling Dell Support but can't get a hold of anyone. My warranty expired 45 days ago.
Did you install the notebook system utility and the chipset drivers, first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
I didn't install the notebook system utility at all. I was just trying to upload a new driver for the webcam, albeit, unsuccessfully.
I also read "How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager and use Internet Explorer to download the drivers, in your browser." and saw that I had already attempted to download the Dell Download Manager using the Internet Explorer function. It also failed.
About 6-8 months ago I was having a problem with my keyboard. The Dell attempted to diagnose the problem but was unable to load any of the diagnostic software on my computer. He came to the conclusion I had a bad hard drive but opted not to replace it. He replaced the keyboard which solved the problem.
I just rain the self diagnostics using the F12 key and found I had a bad hard drive. The error code is 0142, Msg: error code 2000-0142. Msg: Hard drive 0 - self test unsuccessful status 79.
The machine is just two years old so this is not very good. I've had Dell's for each member of my family for more than 15 years and they have lasted for 5 or more years each. I'm very disappointed in this Studio and also the inability to obtain free technical support. I've always been able to use the 800 number and talk to someone in India. They've always been able to troubleshoot and fix my problems. This was not an inexpensive machine but my next one will be a $399. I won't be as upset when it breaks.
