Help, Orange flashing light.
Hey i have a dell xps 700, Have had it for a few years now and everything was working fine on it,
After it been running slow for a while i decided to format it,
After a few days of that the computer wont boot up, No fans, nothing, just the green light on the motherboard comes on and the power button flashing orange,
New power supply put into it. everything taken out reset and put back in, battery out ect and still the same problem is there.
just wondering if any one could possibly help me with this problem, :S
Would be appreciated

You'll likely have a very difficult time locating an original XPS 700 motherboard these days. Once place you can get a XPS 720 motherboard is here. This motherboard will work in the 700; Dell had this whole XPS motherboard exchange program for the 700 several years ago. It was all over Engadget and a number of other tech sites. The XPS 700 and XPS 720 motherboards both support Intel Core 2 Duo processors. If you have a Pentium 4 or Pentium D in your system then you'll have to upgrade the CPU though.

Check the diagnostic LEDs on front panel.

Have you tried a fresh motherboard battery?

Ive replaced, RAM, graphics, taken processor out along with everything else left for about a hour and all put back in,
Not replaced the battery yet but its getting to the only thing that needs changed barr the motherboard.
Just finding it strange how the none of the fans are running ect. not even the power supply one is.

Did you check that power cord is correctly connected to rear of PC and to the wall? Tried a different power cord?
Is there a power supply reset button on rear of this tower? (Unplug before pressing it.)
If you use power strip, surge protector, or UPS, disconnect those and connect directly to the wall, and try a different outlet too.
Are you sure the power supply is correctly connected to the motherboard?
If you're comfortable doing it, power off and unplug. Then disconnect PSU from motherboard. Use a paperclip or short piece of wire to jump black to green wire. Don't cut any wires or remove the connector. Insert the jumper wire into the connector where a black and green wire are connected. Then power the tower on. If hard drive and PSU fan spin up, the PSU is probably ok.
Did you check the connection to the front panel? If not connected correctly, the power button won't work.
Could it be a broken power button and/or failed front panel circuit board..??

Thanks for the help. i shall try out them tomorrow, Kinda given up on it for today. Ill get back to you with good or bad news. hopefully good new!
Only have the one power cable. properly connect. plugged straight into wall.

A flashing power light means the computer is getting power but some component is faulty. Try removing all your ram sticks, cards and disconnect the power going to all your drives. Unplug the computer and press and hold the power button for 10~15 secs. Plug it back in. Listen to hear if the fans spin up briefly. IF the do try pressing the power button and see if the light has changed. If not then either the mother board or power supply is bad. If it is good start adding in components one at a time start with the drives, then the ram then the cards last.
You might also want to put the old supply back in and check again with that one.
From you intial statement that the fans do not spin up that sounds more like the motherboard then the power supply but i would exhaust all other options as finding a board will be time consuming as well as expensive.

I have found out that its my motherboard that is broken.
So, now my question is that, can i get the same xps 700 motherboard or do i have to upgrade to the 720? if the upgrade has to happen will i have to change cpu ect?
Where will i get a new motherboard, been looking at a few website but really i have no idea what im looking for which isnt so helpful :(

You may find a board but it wil be very hit or miss. As for using a 720 board it it possible but will require additional parts. Also be prepared for sticker shock as they are quite pricey. Honestly you are better off putting the money into another system or build your Owen. As fore using you case because its made for BTX style board and would require some extensive hacking. The power supply can't be reused as it will only work in these systems

He would still need the upgrade kit of front panel I/O, rear panel back plate and two interface cables. And the pentium processors will work in a 720 board as I had one when I got mine replaced under the exchange program before I upgraded to a Q6600.

Oh yes, the upgrade kit from the motherboard exchange program came with a matching red or black front panel I/O assembly, all applicable cabling & the mounting hardware. Purchasing it from Discount Electronics or some other 3rd party will only get you the board and probably the mounting hardware. Looks like I stand corrected on the CPUs. The specs Dell has listed for the 720 motherboard don't indicate it supports Pentium processors.
