the system model is Inspiron 1764

I lost the power of the battery quickly so i have been using the mains.  The light is green on the AC adapter.  I have done the test that you said about.

I have had to change the date back every other day.  would the mainboard be the motherboard on it.  Also would this be due to it over heating a lot

What system model?

To reset the system, remove the battery, unplug the system, hold the power button for 30 seconds and remove and reinstall both memory modules.  Verify that the LED on the AC adapter is on before you plug in the notebook end.  If it's not, the adapter is faulty - replace it.

If it's on, try powering up with the adapter only.  If it will, then try with the battery.  If it'll power up without but not with the battery, the battery is faulty.

If it won't power up after a reset, it's most likely the mainboard is bad.
