D800 STILL NO SHUTTING DOWN

Hi, I've a problem with my D800, it freeze at the "Windows is shutting down" screen and I've to force the shut down by pressing the power button, I've try to deselect all the startup programs in msconfig. The first time that i did that, it worked, but after installing other programs such autocad 2004, it happens again. Now if I turn off all the options, it's still not shutting down.

I've upgrade the Ram from 512 to 1024, with the same memory chip that dell ships, if I leave only the original 512 configuration all is ok, but I don't think that is a RAM problem because as I told before sometimes the computer turn off...

The computer recognize the 1024 Mb, it works fine, the reset works, only the shut down problem.

What can it be?

Thanks

courmayeur,

Get the latest bios for your system and see if that helps.

Click Here to go to the Dell File Library.

Just put in your service tag, select the Operating System you have and choose the driver(s) that you want.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Thanks john for your reply, but I've done all the latest updates available...

When you upgrade the memory RAM the system tell that the amount of memory has changed, then to press F1 or F2, to get to the bios, but there, you are not allow to make any change, only the time and date... There is something else to do when uprading the  RAM memory?

My system is not shutting down.

Thanks again

Have you tried disabling executive paging? It's a tweak inside the registry

http://www.arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/disable_execpage-1.html

Or shutting down unnecessary services and resident programs...

jyglory, there is only one thing that I can tell you

THANK YOU VERY MUCH

My problem was solved by disabling executive paging...

I read the article, but I want your opinion, can I leave that option disabled in this machine without problem?

Thanks again

courmayeur,

No problem!

The performance gain is not noticeable at least on my PIII-500 256mega ram

But's it has always been safe to apply that tweak for me, let alone on your 1giga ram D800!

Ever get a solution?  I've got a new D800 with 512MB Ram and the same issue.  Any help?

If you're running Norton Antivirus try shutting it down before turning the machine off.
I've seen NAV do this before.

since you think its your ram (being the contributing factor in this "shutdown" problem)

have you run memtest86 (bootable iso / floppy) or similar ram test program to see if the ram is BAD?

also - i could suggest an xp tweak for "fast shutdown" i dont know what the registry key is off the top of my head - but its an option in antispy-xp and it has reduced by shutdown by up to 10sec

also - if you could give a listing of programs running (or programs loading) that could also be an aid in diagnosing your problem

also - your hardware specs, which wifi card, bluetooth, drivers, dock, etc...

I upgraded my memory, and have had no problems.  Mine came with 512.

Have you reformatted?  I haven't yet.  The OS was factory installed.

Seems the user installed a wireless mouse and intermittently the system won't shutdown.  Thanks to all for the input.
