i am having the same problem too, and i tried everything but cant seem to fix it, any luck??
and also ive heard that there is an issue with the wireless card on this particular machine, that the speed drops down or disconnects. have u had this issues??
Well, at least I'm not the only one experiencing this... that's a start I guess.
I haven't had any wireless issues yet, that I've noticed, but then I've only had the laptop for three days, and only ever use it at home connected to the same wireless network. So far I'm pretty happy... just the lousy Trackpad drivers, and the weird video thing with the dozen or so pixels of unusuable desktop space at the top as my only real issues.
I hope someone can solve both of these issues eventually.
experiencing the same same problem here... now there's three of us. searched the web for a solution, but found nothing helpful. suspected winamp for causing the problem, deleting it first helped but the problem returned after a few minutes. it really annoys me, got my dell 2 days ago and spent most of the time solving this stupid error.
if anyone finds out something please let me know... maybe we should go official... seems to be a wide spread error.
Closing the laptop lid (sleep mode) and then raising the lid, causes it.
So I can make the problem happen any time I want. And I can eliminate the problem if I'm willing to log off and log back in... and it will stay gone until the laptop goes to sleep.
It's completely repeatable and predictable in that sense.
So it's something about entering sleep mode. It just starts acting like the top of the screen is about a dozen pixels down from the actual top. If you drag a window and the mouse cursor hits that invisible line a dozen or so pixels down, it'll engage the "snap" feature to maximize the window. If you move a window up into that area, it'll move itself back down so it doesn't occupy that top strip.
This is just very weird. I have to think it's an issue with the video drivers. Is there any way to get some official Dell input on this?
u got it rite about the login out which fixes the problem... i never knew that. well thanks for that temporary fix (sort of). anyways u guys might wanna look into this thread
true, loggin out an in again solves the problem for a few minutes... downloaded the latest nvidia-drivers, but no effect. hope dell comes up with a solution soon...
I've got the same problem, and am very keen on a fix. I also found that iTunes doesn't leave this gap whereas other programs will. Hope that helps someone to debug it.
i called the dell support today having some more problems with my graphic-card, mostly weird after effects crashes that seemed to be related. told them about our little problem here too and asked them if its a serial error. the guy on the phone didn't know anything about it but promised me to send an technician over to exchange my motherboard and graphic-card... if that solves the problem I'll let you know.
If you actually get a Dell tech to look at your screen, that would be awesome. Be sure to let him know MANY other people are experiencing the same thing. I would be surprised if it's the physical hardware card though. It seems more like a driver problem or possibly some other piece of software on the system.

Oh, in addition to the iTunes behaviour, i've just noticed that the gap is actually still there, but at the BOTTOM of the screen!
