There's a good chance, particularly on a system this old, that the cause is a faulty hard drive. F12 at powerup - run an extended diagnostic on the drive.
Thank you very much for your help, I tried the extended diagnostics and all of the tests came back as a pass.
One thing I am still not sure about is how the dell replacement recovery disc works, do you need to have warranty on the laptop to get the disc or can you simply purchase the disc as a stand-alone product?

All you need to be is the original owner and Dell will send out the disc.

can you verify that this info is correct, because i am an original owner and i cant get hold of a new restore disc
