Was struggling with same problem. Then noticed when muting the line-in mic the headphones were also muted.

Fixed it by right clicking on speaker icon (bottom right corner), selecting " recording devices ", right click " disable".

Fixed it by disabling the line-in mic.

How to:  right click on the speakers icon (bottom right corner). Select "Recording Devices". Right click "Microphone/Line In" and select "disable".

I'm having this problem and have tried going to sound/playback in the control panel but there is only one option controlling both speakers and headphones.  I have to disable both or neither.  It didn't used to work this way and I don't believe I did anything to cause it.  Since others have noticed a link with Skype, I was having a problem with Skype and uninstalled it.  Any ideas?

I'm having this problem

The problem is that when you use Skype and are also playing other audio, the other audio comes out of the speakers? If not, please describe the problem.

Any ideas?

What is the full model name of your laptop and what operating system does it have?

Ask Cortana for sound trouble shooting and through that download different sound drivers until one works for you. I solved this problem doing this and the drive I ended up with was Microsoft HD.

This worked for me ...

First, I had a problem with the speakers not muting when streaming to AirPlay (using AirParrot2).

To fix this I had to remove Waves Maxx Audio which was a pain to use anyway ... no loss.

I needed to (1) remove the device from the device manager then (2) install the program and then (3)  using the same sequence as below but WITHOUT headphones plugged in.

But then I got no sound through the headphones when I had a monitor connected via HDMI.

The clue will be in the Sound dialog (right-click speaker icon in task bar, choose Playback Devices).

You should see BOTH Speakers (High Definition Audio Device) AND Headphones (High Definition Audio Device).

If you only see speakers, right click and choose "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices".

If still no Headphones option, then, PLUG IN HEADPHONES, then:

1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).

2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".

3. Select to "Update Driver Software".

4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".

5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".

6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.

7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).

8. Click "Next".

9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" to install the driver.

10. Restart the laptop.

You should now see BOTH Speakers and Headphone options in Playback Devices, and inserting headphones will cancel speakers and sound will be delivered to the headphones.
