What if anything can I do to get my system working again until I can purchase a new laptop.

2006 is not that old for a laptop. I am using one of that vintage without any issues.

Have more RAM is always a help. How much is in your laptop?

I was going for the i7 processor and Windows Home and Business in order to get Outlook.

Why do you need a laptop with i7 cpu just to get Outlook?????

I don't need a laptop with i7 to get Outlook.  I just felt that I should get the fastest processor and I wanted to get Outlook because so many people that I do work for use Outlook.  The processor speed and Outlook have nothing to do with each other.  I will check to determine how much RAM I have.  Maybe increasing it will help the situation.

Thanks!

Boot the notebook and press F12 when you see the Dell logo. Run diagnostics and run the extended test on the hard drive and post back your results.

Since it was working fine initially and after installing Win 7, the problems are related to programs you are installing and all the junk that accumulates.

First, get rid of McAfee and use one of the good free AV programs. Then uninstall all non-necessary apps and use Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner.
