Listen the XPS/9100/5150/5100/1100 are Ugly and Huge mostly the XPS/9100 but i dont see a single problem with the 600m's design and that is pretty similar to the 8600's except smaller. I think my laptop (600m) is great looking (better than a 1450 or what ever that predicesser was). The 8600's case is basically a large 600m case so i see no problems. they do look prettier (600m and 8600) when seen in person!!!

come on everyone: don't judge a book by its cover!

i have to say there's nothing wrong with i8600/9100/xps in terms of appearance. i actually like the blue rim around the keyboard and the silver chassis. but i have to say that the design is a little bit outdated. the current design first appeared with the new latitude d series more than a year ago (if i remeber correctly... not too sure about that actually). and i think it's time for a fresh make-over. as for the new designers, how about the fab-five?  (nah, just kidding.)

??-----Inspiron 8600-----??
Pentium-M 1.6Ghz
1Gb RAM
60Gb 7200rpm HDD
DVD+RW (NEC)
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO TURBO
15.4" WUXGA+
Win XP Pro
Dell TrueMobile 1300 WLAN
etc etc etc

oh, i forgot to mention. i9100 and xps only looks good from the top for me. as for the side views - ughh! it makes me ask myself "why is i8600 sitting on an 8cm thick heatsink!

peace out!

I was at my friend's computer store today and had a chance to look over an Acer Aspire 2000. It looked much, much, much better than the new Inspirons and the build quality was very good. Does Dell even have a design department?

"Does Dell even have a design department?"

Yeah they do, but I think they might take too many "smoking" breaks and thought it was actually cool, eg:

Designer one: "hey man, why don't we make this thing really big for, like, secret compartments for our stash or something"

Designer two: "Dude, you're on a roll today... can we put in a cup holder too?"

Designer one: "What do you think I've been using the CD tray for?" *laughs hysterically"

Well, that's my opinion on how this horrible design may have occured anyway.

Hey, Dude! This portability thing's highly over-rated. Let's make 'em big like the 7500 was five or six years ago - only BIGGER! Oh; the 7500 could accomodate three hard drives; but nobody needs more than one hard drive anyway - and bigger is better; right?! Totally retro, man!

Designer 4: Oh Man i can't see my secret stash in my 8600's CD tray!!!

Designer 5: Oh i have an idea put another on top and add an inch to each edge?

Designer 6: you know that's not a bad idea, many of the worlds people need a desklap like that!!!

Designer 6: That's the best idea you've gotton yet
