i think its obvious dell isn't going to support upgrades for older models, but hey it was worth the try. figure it like this, from a marketing stand point, dell makes more money selling laptops than selling the video cards seprately. and maybe dell has looked into selling video upgrade options for their older notebooks and they don't want to spend the extra money into research and creation of specialized video cards for their older series laptops. it may not be profitable enough to do from dell's stand point. plus the upgradable video option on the new iXPS, i believe since that's a specialized "gaming" notebook and they are going after a special target consumer that's more likely to want an upgrade option. thats why they offer it here. plus its to copy, i mean, follow suit with what other notebook companies are doing with their gaming notebooks. we can complain all we want about dell constantly changing the design and form factor of their notebooks but they're not gonna listen. untill there is an adapted standard form factor for laptop video cards i think our complaints and requests for upgrade options will remain unanswered. dell's bottom line is they want to sell you a system, not an upgrade for one.

id like a final answer too. I wont be purchasing another dell if they dont release an upgraded video card for the 5150, it cant be that hard and there has been a whole lot of interest.

Hello All,

I looked into this request for video upgrades on existing systems and was told that "

Dell has no plans to support an upgrade path on video for any existing system other than the Inspiron XPS.

The Inspiron XPS has this option designed into it starting from its conception due to customer feedback.

If it is successful, expect other systems in the future to have this feature designed into them"

Thanks,

I think that they should reconsider!! All I want is the part! I will do it myself and take full responsibility for my actions. I believe that everything on the 5150 makes for a great perfomance laptop except that the video card area needs a lift. This laptop with a 128mb video card in it would be a great laptop and I am sure that many would agree. It would satisfy all those who have it now and certainly help sales of it to prospective new buyers.
I think Dell should reconsider!!!

Thats all well and good (thats pretty much what you get now ordering a card from Spare Parts ) but is probably not going to happen. Dell likely doesn't see the expense of manufacturing new cards to the old form factors as being profitable enough.... there may not be a big enough market for it. Remember that the people on these forums are just a small amount of the customers Dell has, and the majority here are more tech savvy, wanting these upgrades more (and knowing what they are) than the average user at home.

they need to reconsider. Ill do it myself and they can void my warranty, it doesnt matter, I just want a video card that lives up fair expectations. The geforce fx go is a quite frankly trash, but aside from that I would be very happy with my 5150. They really need to offer us a chance to replace it with a card that lives up to standards, like a radeon 9600 mobile or better. I honestly feel a bit ripped off with this expensive card no better than a geforce 4 or radeon 9000.

Like i said, it can void my warranty, they can even grossely rip me off with the new card, but i need something better, something i thought i was getting, and without buying a new laptop (from someone other than dell).

Thanks for at least finally responding dell, had to pull some teeth just for an answer at all.  I am however dissapointed that they arent planning on offering any upgrades for our systems.  I would definitly still like to have an upgraded card if dell would wish to pursue this path sometime, they should take note that there ARE A LOT of us who want this part and would be willing to pay $$$ to get it , we would also be more loyal in the future knowing dell would change its plans to meet the needs of the consumer(offer upgrades for existing laptops) rather than releasing something new to maximize profit (that overpriced, oversized gaming laptop called the xps).  My 5150 is only a little less powerfull if you think about it but it costs 2,000 less and gets much better battery life, only thing its missing is a good GPU.  Oh well
