You may upgrade to Windows 7, as your system has a Windows Vista license, it is eligible to upgrade.
When installing Windows 7 you are best to perform "a Clean Install", for best results follow my wiki here, ignore the Vista DVD for now, you shouldn't have to reinstall Vista to upgrade to 7.
Win 7 does not look for a windows disk. When you boot to the win 7 upgrade disk, it checks your hard drive for a qualifying version of windows so don't remove it or reformat beforehand. One thing--since you dislike Vista, you should do a custom install with formatting when you install win 7. That will get rid of any vista glitches. You must boot to the upgrade disk before starting the custom install with format. Directions here: windows.microsoft.com/.../Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7 follow the one that says custom install with format.

Thanks for that. My question really is if the dell reinstallation DVD for vista can be used in the 7 upgrade process?
