Dell Vostro 3450 suspend sound / noise battery drain on ubuntu 11.10

Anyone has an issue with dell Vostro (3450) w/AMD graphics card, running Ubuntu (11.10) and their battery being drained quickly in suspend mode?
Also, I noticed when in suspend mode, laptop makes a weird sound, that goes on and off. When blinking power light is ON its louder, when blinking light is off it
fades.  Its very high pitch / which makes it hard to hear.

11.10 is okay, but I switched to using xfce desktop with it instead of Unity

It bugs the heck out of me that they seemed to have decided to keep the close, max, min buttons on the left ala the Macs apparently.

One thing that I believe is better with 11.10 over 11.04 is that it recognized my T-mobile UMG181 USB device out of the box. I had to work at it with 11.04

I did.

But I hate that I have to do that with every single new release.
