weird column headings in Excel

Question

Somehow my excel (2000) column headings are numbers instead of letters.  It's wreaking havoc with my formulae.  I have deleted the registry key, deleted the software and reinstalled all to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Tools, Options, General tab. Remove the check from R1C1.
