Go into the BIOS setup and load default settings. Worked for me.

Thanks very much SSBank, you provided us with a 'workaround'.

Like the others, I updated the BIOS from A02 to A03 on Latitude E5520 laptops.  We recently bought 22 of them.  After imaging them I had updated the BIOS to A03 and personalized a few BIOS setings and observed the code 10 error with the Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit NIC.  I then downloaded the latest NIC and chipset drivers from Dell and reinstalled them.  Disbled/enabled then uninstalled/reinstalled the Integrated Local Area NIC in Device Manager, no difference, still Code 10 error in Device Manager.

It turns out the following setting triggers or causes this problem, at least in BIOS rev A03:

Changing the setting for the Integrated NIC from its default of "Enabled with PXE" to "Enabled"

If it is NOT set to Enabled with PXE (which we never use), then the Code 10 problem arises.  The solution or workaround for me was to change the setting for the Integrated NIC back to Enabled with PXE.

After loading default settings, and verifying the Code 10 problem was gone, I went back and changed only the one setting on the Integrated NIC to Enabled rather than Enabled with PXE.  The Code 10 problem came back!  Bingo.  The Enabled with PXE setting for some reason is mandatory, otherwise the Code 10 problem occurs.

This is obviously a defect in the A03 BIOS.  Has anyone changed the Integrated NIC setting in BIOS A02 to Enabled rather than Enabled with PXE to see if Code 10 occurs?  I don't really feel like going back and flashing 22 laptops with BIOS A02.  The laptops seem happy with the Enabled with PXE setting on our network and the Code 10 problem is gone.  However, I am going to give Dell a call or a chat right now.

Thanks again SSBank.  That really helped me resolve this issue.

I contacted Dell Tech Support via chat and reported this issue to them.  They took note of it and said they would give notice when an update is available, presumably a BIOS update.  I gave them a link to this thread since their second level support person said this was the first he had heard of this particular problem.  I wanted them to know that I wasn't the only one having this issue.  He suggested for now, flashing those laptops with rev A02 which had been updated to A03.

Forgot to choose Suggested Answer in my previous post.

If you have updated the BIOS to A03 on a Latitude E5520 with Win 7 x64, and are experiencing a Code 10 error in Device Manager on the Broadcom NetExtreme integrated NIC, do one of the following:

  • Flash the BIOS back to rev A02 or...
  • Go into the BIOS settings on rev A03 and put the setting for the Integrated NIC back to its deault of "Enabled with PXE".  On BIOS rev A03, if you have changed from the default setting of "Enabled with PXE" to "Enabled", this triggers a Code 10 error (driver could not start) and in such a case the Integrated NIC will not work at all on the network.  Wireless connection still works, it is only the LAN connection which is affected.

I was pulling my hair out, that is, until I read this post.  I did as you suggested and the NIC driver is working fine now.

Thank you very much.

Bios A3 for the Latitude E5520 is problematic in another way.  Try running Dell Diagnostics on boot (F12), and you'll get a false positive with the follow incorrect error of "Error 2000-0415 LCD Cable" problem.  In fact, A2 the error goes away.  Dell needs to launch a new Bios!

Thanks for the update.  That is good to know.  I am a litle upset that Dell never contacted me as they promised back when I opened a support ticket, to inform me when they had a new BIOS update available for this product after version A03 to fix the "PXE off" boot problem.  So if there was an A04 I never heard about it or A05.  But now I know.  Great.  Thanks again.
