Looking at the situation, it seems like the machine had accidentally booted to the MediaDirect Partition and now it's unable to return to the normal Windows environment.
My advice would be to:
1. Power on the system using the MediaDirect button instead trying to do so with the normal Power button.
2. Let the computer boot completely using the MediaDirect Partition.
3. Use the Arrow keys to navigate within MediaDirect, and EXIT from the MediaDirect Utility using the available options within MD.
4. Now try to power on the machine normally.
I hope this helps.

Regarding your query, we would need to take a look at the system configuration. It is possible that the mediadirect key on the keyboard is stuck, from the symptoms you just described. This could be an issue with the hinge cover cable as well. To get the service tag details, I have sent you a friend request on the community. Please accept, so that we can look at the service tag of your machine on private messaging.
Thank you for the details. The case has been submitted to our India Contact Center and a representative will get in touch with you to discuss this further.
We thank you for your patience regarding this query so far.

My XPS 1530 opens on Dell Media Direct screen and I'm unable to go any further. I unplug, rest and try again .... usually several times over almost an hour before, for no reason I can see, it then goes into conventional boot. I've tried leaving in "sleep" or "Hibernate" mode but doesn't seem to change things..... I have several newer dell laptops but this is my favorite and am getting very frustrated.
