Hi Angie,

Welcome to the Community,

After running the full diagnostics as advised by Rick,if you still get the 0146 error only than check in BIOS (tap F2 on start up),if the HDD is getting detected.

If yes,use this link to download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager - Notebooks  driver (either burn it on CD or save it is USB flash drive)

www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

At the point when it says load drivers, use the CD or USB drive depending on where you have saved the above driver.

For steps for Clean reinstall refer to this wiki from our Rockstar natakuc4 :

en.community.dell.com/.../3327.1-2-a-clean-install-of-windows-vista-on-dell-systems.aspx

Hope this helps,

Thank You

is that what you think because of the error code I got from the hard drive during the diagnostic test? and if i do how do I get a new hard drive for this specific computer dell inspiron 1545? never had to do this before? so u really think i need new hard drive even when it still shows in the bios that i have a hard drive? doesnt say its not installed says its still there but with the error code does it mean its toast?

Hi amclark,

It depends on weather you're using Windows Vista 32 bit or 64 bit.Check on the Windows Vista DVD you're using,it should show 32 or 64 bit.Depending on what you see there, you need to either download 32 bit or 64 bit drivers.

And regarding the 0146 error code, you can try reinstalling the Windows,if it still does not work after reinstalling the Windows(or if the system freezes while installing the  Windows) than you need to replace the HDD.

For step 6 just download and save the driver from the link on my first post onto a USB/DVD.

roshon,     im sorry to keep bothering you this should be one of or my last question. regarding step seven the reason i am doing this clean install is because of majorroiruses and spyware that attacked the computer so i need to wipe the computer completely clean. so do i need to also follow step seven and this step seems really confusing for me. ive figured out most of the others but i need the computer completely clean so im guessing i need to do step seven and im not quite sure how to get imgburn to do the burn. i already downloaded the other component for got the name im on my phone but the it stated that i need to use imgburn to complete the step and i dont have this on my computer. also my computer burned the thirtytwo bit driver info fine to disc but im having trouble getting the other setp seven burned to a disc. i dont know why. very frustrated. they are the right kinds of discs and i dont know why one would burn and now the other wont. so do i need to do step seven to get rid of all the viruses and everything else on the computer?and if i do could u please explain step seven a little more clearly for people like me who do not understand computers well. thank u so much for all of your time. its greatly appreciated.sincerely, angie

Hi amclark,

You can skip the Step 7 is for system which came with the Dell Media Direct.Regarding the Virus and spyware on the system,in step 8 follow • 2. To format it, leave the partition intact but remove all data and factory partition. You might as well delete the Dell factory partition if going down this route as it will no longer work and hence serve no service and instead Extend the main partition.

Since you've mentioned that you've already deleted the recovery partion in your first post,so you should have only one partion. You can format that partition and install Windows on it (you should be aware that doing this will delete all your previous data from the system).

Angie,

The point is that your hard drive is failing. If you're under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support. If no longer in warranty, then hard drive will need replaced. Please have someone help back up all your files and folders that you cannot afford to lose.

So I tried again doing as you said and my problem is when I get to the Where Do You Want To Install windows page its a blank page. No partitions show up at all, not a single one is listed. There are no partitions to choose from just a blank page. So Im assuming this means my hard drive is dead. I attempted to load the drivers from a CD I burned with the 32 bit file you gave me, but it tries to read the Cd and it says... No device drivers were found. Make sure the installation media contains the correct drivers and then click ok.... Im assuming since I dont even have the correct page with any partitions on it to install windows that the hard drive is dead. Is this why it wont load the drivers? Because I dont have any partitions showing up on the page?

So in your opinion from what I am describing does it sound like my Hard Drive is dead and I need a new one? If this is the case I guess I will try to get my husband to get one for me. Being this ill is so difficult because you cant get out and do the things you want to do. I guess I could just order one online instead of going to a store like Frys Electronics. If you believe the hard drive is gone are there any websites you know of where they are trustworthy where I could purchase a new Hard Drive? And also can you please mention what type of hardrive I need for this computer. its a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. thank you for all of your kind help its greatly appreciated. someone else on this posting thread did tell me which kind of hard drive to get I just wanted to ask one more person for their opinion and if the type of hard drive he mentioned is the correct type i need. Your kindness is so appreciated for someone like me who is clueless with computers but relys on it so much to keep in touch with the outside world when I'm completely bedridden during treatments.

thanks again,

Angie
