In most cases, no - you cannot. The systems that ship with i7 CPUs have a different system board and require a more powerful AC adapter. You may be able to run a faster i5, but the i7s usually require a different system board.
I wouldn't count on using an Ivy Bridge i5 -- Dell has released new versions of the system with that CPU, so it's unlikely the older ones will support it.
Your dell inspiron will support any G2 i7, ivy bridge CPU i'm not sure , you'd have to update your bios first then try running a cheap i5 3210M G3 ivy bridge cpu. Let me know if it works!
I have an N7110 with an i3-2350m, I have a feeling that this might support i7-2670QM too. I realize that I need a beefier power adapter than 65W. I actually have a big dell adapter lying here somewhere.
Within a processor generation, you should be able to upgrade - if you have a Sandy Bridge (second-gen) CPU, you must upgrade with Sandy Bridge -- the third generation CPUs (Ivy Bridge) WILL NOT work -- nor will non-mobile (desktop) CPUs.
To go to an i7 you'll want at least a 90W adapter - and if you have discrete video, you'll want at least 130W.

Yes. I have upgraded to I7-2760QM quad core. I was running I3-2430M.
The issue for me was getting the linked graphics functioning correctly (I have the AMD Radeon HD 7400M as well as Intel on chip graphics).
Here's what finally worked:
Disable AMD driver in device manager. Restart.
Uninstall existing Intel driver and shutdown completely.
Start and install Intel driver from Intel driver files not Windows 10 or 7 supplied drivers
Shutdown.
Start laptop. You should see your graphics resolutions and colors as expected for the Intel HD display.
Then enable AMD device profile and install drivers. I used from AMD instead of Windows provided.
May also work for nVidia.

Upgrading the CPU will also void your warranty.

So, I can't use i7. Also, i can't use i5 Ivy Bridge, right?
So, my choice is a only i5-2540M as a maximum? So sad.
I know about warranty, it's void soon (1 year).

i have a Dell Inspiron 15R N5110
mine has the Core I3-2310M
I replaced the original 500GB HDD with my Intel 80GB SSD (i know i lose space but the speed is really like a HUGE HUGE upgrade.
anyhow when i was there i seen the cpu is not soldered and has that little flat head screw that holds the cpu in place.
that got me wondering what is the highest cpu i can put in this laptop?
my service tag is:
<ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>
here is my system:
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Index?c=us&s=dhs&cs=19&l=en&t=system
i have a toshiba l305-s5944 that had a core duo and i replaced it with a core 2 duo T9300
so i have done this before just not sure what the best cpu i can put in this laptop.
im hoping a real fast I5
